Solved Curious Start Menu Activity

I have a curious issue with the start menu. It's not a major annoyance or problem but I want to know what causes it and if there is a fix.

Whenever I power on my laptop (Lenovo Yoga 13) while it is in closed position and then open it and log into windows the Win8 start menu tiles appear smaller and rearranged to reflect their change in size as shown in the screenshot



But when I restart or open up my laptop before I turn it on the Win8 start menu will appear with slightly larger tiles as shown in this screenshot.



It's a weird thing to happen and I actually prefer the smaller tiles as I can see more on my screen.
Any info will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I assume you have them all set (by default) to large and when this happens they appear as the small (default) size; yes? If so, why not just go in and modifiy each tile to display as small? That way, you should have the same result either way. AND, since you prefer the smaller size anyway, it turns out to be a win-win situation and you don't have to try and solve this mystery.
