Hi guys can I please ask for a little advice please.

I have just upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, and I have a small problem.

When I was using windows 7 I was able to select a bunch of MP3 tracks In windows explorer and at the bottom windows displayed the total size of the selected tracks and the total playing time of the selected tracks.

But now with windows 8 I get the total file size but not the total playing time, is there anyway I can get this back please.

Regards

Best I could come up with is to right-click the selected files, go to properties, then to the details tab, and the total play time is listed cumulatively for the selected files:

As a general rule, a 128Kb/sec MP3 file is 1MB per minute. e.g. a 3.5 min song would be 3.5MB.

Hi there
try free MP3tag. You don't have to re-tag anything but gives good info (as does Winamp --another decent program - although Winamp is a media player while mp3tag is purely a tagging program).

Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v2, MP4, OGG, FLAC, ...)

Here's what it displays -- note I usually have everything in FLAC - but it gives the same info for mp3 etc.

Cheers

Hi topgundcp, jimb045, Phone Man,

thanks for the advice I appreciate your advice but I have been able to show the length of the MP3 files by adding another column and that gets me the length of the Mp3 file as you point out.

But it does not give me the total playing time of several Mp3,s files

I am trying to select several Mp3 files and then see what to total playing time is for the selected files if possible

The OP wants a single "cumulative" calculation for the total playtime of all selected files. So, if he has selected 20 files, that are 2 minutes each in duration, he wants to see 40 minutes (somewhere), with no manual addition/calculation involved. Now, I gave it my best shot in a previous post but there is always room for improvement; yes?

I just found the answer. Select a number of files, right click, select Properties then Detail. It gives the total Length for the files selected.

Hi guys

Thanks for all the advice

Norepli is correct i jusy want a "cumulative" total for the selected files and i see Phone Man had come up with the same answer thanks to both of you.

This was easy in windows 7 it was just displayed at the bottom of the windows explorer screen, i wounder why it does not do this i windows 8

Complete guesswork on my part... but I believe that one of the design goals of Windows 8 was to make it use less power and increase battery life.

The "total length of audio" is probably not used 100% of the time by most people with folders full of MP3 files, so instead of calculating that sum every time it ends up at one of those folders, it only does it when asked.

It's less convenient for you of course, but probably saves power when taken across all Windows users.

Details Pane

Turn on the "Details pane" in File Explorer (it's a sidebar now) and then select the mp3 files.
It should show you the total run time of the selected files (it does in W7).

Hi lehnerus

That's it brilliant thank you.

Let me explain why I wanted this feature back, I have loads of audiobooks almost all are MP3 files some with chapters of various lengths, so only 2 or 3 minutes long and with a total book playing time of 15 or 16 hours long.

I am building an index with the author name, book title, and total playing time, and to manually count several hundred files to get the total playing time is out of the question.

Thanks for all the help
