I was really happy to go to 8 when the offer came out to purchase it at such a great price. Now I really wish I had not. I have no one in my usual group of people who know computer stuff who knows a thing about 8 and I am having mountains of problems with it.

It worked great at first but all of the sudden and for no apparent reason I started getting a strange error code if I attempted to install anything. In this thread: http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/22092-i-need-serious-help-8-please.html ) I researched and found that I needed to activate the Administrator account and install from there, which I have done. Now so many things do not work and I am not really able to figure out why. My Incredimail can not access the network from my admin account for some reason. It keeps getting a firewall error. I have no idea of how to fix this. Also, I am in the BETA for Neverwinter Nights. I downloaded and installed the game which, of course, had to be done from the admin account. This was automatically placed in the public games folder. I do not want to play an online game from my admin account. I logged out from there and logged in to my regular account. It did not show Neverwinter as being installed there. This happened with Skype too. I figured I knew where it was saved so I went to the public folder and launched the game. It is not able to run from there and crashes. It does run from the admin account. Why? How do I grant my regular account permission to install? I have searched the user settings and I have not found a way. this account is part of the administrator group. Why can it not install? I have looked all over to find tutorials or any kind of instructions for fixing all of this but nothing I have found seems to apply. Would I be better off just going back to 7 where I knew how to do all of this and could make things work or can any of this be fixed in 8?

I'm unsure why you are having these problems here with Windows 8, the same should have more or less been true with Windows 7. It's the fact that things have installed under 1 profile that is causing you grief. Aside from some graphical UI changes, the underpinnings of Windows 8 are pretty much the same as Windows 7.

That is what I thought too, that 8 and 7 worked very much the same but apparently I was wrong. I could get around 7 pretty well and my husband is a software person professionally and his company software is designed to work with 7 so he REALLY knows it. He can not figure out this stuff either.

I actually really like the interface I just need to find how to make it work for me. Is there a way to share the install? I can not install it from the account where I need it to be at all. I get that error about inconstant extensions. (however it is worded) I only have 2 accounts on the machine. How can I give my regular user full control to be able to install. That would solve things for the moment until I can learn more. I do not want to spend the entire beta week=end frustrated and trying to make it work. thanks for the quick reply, by the way.

Hmmm, wish I had some answers for you. All of my issues with Windows 8 are based on the UI and lack of cohesiveness and a fair bit of goofiness with full screen metro apps. But outside of that, the underpinnings haven't been an issue at all. We have a few people in our office now running 8 full time and it's been a non-issue from a technical standpoint. Just a few hiccups visually.

One thing to check out is if your user account is solely a member of the Administrator group, or is it a member of the Users group too? The permissions used to be filtered to the least able group, and occasionally in Windows 7 I found that problem.

:winkey:+x, Computer Management, Local Users and Groups, Users, Username, right-click, Properties, Member Of...
If Username is a member of Users, select and click remove, and make sure Administrators is in the Member Of... list. Then logoff. and log back on.

OK. The admin account was a member of both. My normal account is a member of home users and users. I want that account to be able to do things. According to what I was just reading, and what I remember from 7 I should be getting a prompt to ask for an admin password to install from my other account but I am not. Just the error I talked about in my original post here. I removed user from the admin account. Should I change where my account is as well?

It depends what you want to do - on your own machine, all you need to be is Administrator, or User, or Power User, or if you have other machines in your homegroup (or other network you connect to) that you don't need to be Administrator on, you could just have standard user accounts there. I am not sure where your "home users" account comes from - can you explain?
Demo: Understanding user accounts

Local Users and Groups best practices

I find little difference in running as administrator or as user, since UAC asks me to confirm actions like opening an Admin command prompt both ways. It just seems a little less restrictive to be set up as Administrator. I have to say that I have not picked up a Trojan horse (Malware) in the last 20 years of computer use, but then I don't use Internet Explorer (or as occasionally as possible), just up-to-date versions of other Browsers, nor an email client on my PC, just web-based email services. If you do either of these Microsoft options (I.E or Outlook), I would run as a User, and have a separate Administrator account for, well, administration, since UAC works pretty well to protect you.

Hi there
reading THROUGH the OP's first post - it would appear that the REAL problem he's having with W8 isn't W8 per se - but with some application very few of us have even heard of -- much less used - namely INCREDIMAIL.

Now if you could post EXACTLY what your problem is then solutions can be found. To abandon an OS because some obscure application doesn't work isn't really a decent solution. If you really HAVE to have that application and it doesn't work on W8 but you are happy with the rest of it then why not run that application on a VIRTUAL MACHINE -- there's plenty of tutorials on this site on how to do this.

My take would be to JUNK incredimail -- I've had a little read on it -- I'd switch to something like GMAIL which works, is free and almost universally used and understood.

W8 complications with installs sounds really strange -- I just "Installed" it. I don't understand where all these "Profiles" came from -- I installed W8 Enterprise -- I think the only things I had to set up were the region / time zone and where (which partition) did I want to install it - and it just installed. (Abd the product key of course -- but on Enterprise - activation is slightly different since you need to actually CHANGE the product key with the SLUI command. On non Enterprise versions activation is straight forward.

Cheers

Hi jimbo45

Found this:

Windows 8 Compatibility : IncrediMail Support Center

At the moment only the IncrediMail 2.5 version is compatible with Windows 8.

Please note that IncrediMail 2.5 is a beta version so there are still some issues.

Click here to learn more and download IncrediMail 2.5.

Note: Once you install IncrediMail 2.5 there is no way to downgrade to IncrediMail 2.

Hi there
I think you've agreed (at least implicitly) with me -- just DITCH this weird email client and choose something that's used successfully around the world like GMAIL (and GMAIL also works with Outlook too if you ever need to install that).

As for the other problems with install of W8 --can't understand what the OP's problems are -- there's almost nothing one needs to enter except a key and regionalisation. (For Enterprise activation is slightly --but ever so slightly different as I posted earlier in this thread).

Cheers

lol, that what is the point of upgrading to Windows 8 in the first place?

Hi there
There's a lot more than that -- faster slicker OS, more driver / hardware support -- far far better security system, native handling of ISO format (I.e mount and read ISO's directly - without needing 3rd party solutions), - simpler install, recovery that works, file update history etc etc.

A new file system will shortly be introduced allowing direct directory and disk sizes of larger than 3 TB without having to go through hoops and rings. -- A lot of people now have over 3TB of multi-media files which they don't want to have to have in separate libraries etc. (OK you can SPAN volumes but the disadvantage with this is if one volume in the group fails you lose THE LOT).

Just for the SECURITY improvements alone it's worth upgrading to W8.
The original question could have been asked about ANY of the previous versions of Windows.

I mean - this one worked (pic enc) quite well so why did we need W2000 and XP. - Same question, same arguments.

Cheers
jimbo

As far as I can see, the underpinnings changed from Vista to /7 and from /7 to /8. With Windows 8 they made a major rewrite of the kernel - for whatever reason. That's why it so buggy I think. Hopefully they will iron that out over time.

A lot of the bugs must have come in with the last builds because e.g. the CP was very stable.

Every Preview build of Windows 8 for me was nothing but stable, on my PC, on an HP laptop from 2008, an ASUS laptop, and an HP desktop as well, oh and an ASUS netbook, a Compaq desktop (from 2005), and I think a few others I had a Preview build running on. Nothing but stable. Only problems I really had were with the Hybrid Boot feature and hot swapping of hard drives. You can't shut down (with Hybrid Boot enabled) a PC and swap it into a different PC and transfer files and then put the drive back into that PC and have those files there. It's just like hibernating the system and doing that, the system won't see those changes. Even today, I still do that just in case, I don't know if that issue still exists or not, but either way. The Developer Preview was worse though, I had a hard drive's file system get THOROUGHLY corrupt due to that, like the NTFS file system was totally corrupt. Plugged the drive back into my puter, the drive was COMPLETELY empty with no chance of remotely recovering anything. Fun night that was...

Well, hot swapping is pretty exotic. There are easier ways to accomplish what you wanted to do. I don't think Joe Public does a lot of hot swapping.

You might just as well say why upgrade from Windows 2000 -- the whole kybosh is basically dependant on old Windows NT code -- even the Windows identifiers of Windows 8 still is labelled Windows NT 6--I think.

No, not really, but I do. It's that small thing that needs to be sidestepped around. I do hot swapping of drives and copying data over as it's the fastest way: hard drive to hard drive. A USB drive could work, but it would take a while to copy data from one drive, to the USB drive, then over to the destination drive.
