Rose the computer I bought on Monday came with Windows 8 installed and after two days of grappling with it and getting nowhere I've reverted to the desktop and downloaded a start menu so I can at least use the computer.!

Win 8, (VM win7, XP, Vista)

    Hello Rose,

There are several flavors of start menus for windows 8 the one I use is "Classic Start Menu" which gives you the choice of using either the Start Menu from Win 7, Vista, or XP (there are a great deal more offerings in Classic Start Menu). There are skins out there that will allow you to change the look and feel of the desktop also. There is a nice program (ModernMix) put out by Stardock that allows you to use the Modern Apps from the App store in desktop.

So there are a good deal of programs and apps that can be downloaded and used to change the look and feel to whatever you want, Just remember to create a recovery point prior to using any of these programs/apps before applying them. Good Luck, and remember Google can be your friend. . .

Also, under personalization the windows 7 had color and appearance. Nothing for windows 8

Before you give up you might try getting acquainted with 8 a little better.

Go to Start Screen and type 8 => click the Store tile => click All Prices => click Free & choose some books to understand 8 better

to help with the win8 differences you can go to START and type in help ,it will open the search results help and support ,click on it .

no need to bad mouth win8 as a first time user ,get use to it first ,i did ,been using it since last August, and like it very much ,and no i did not install any third party software change back to make it look like win7 , ,i learned how to use the new win 8 start ,maybe i just don't care if i have colors when i go to personalize, but when i went there and looked i do have colors .
