Hi there
coming from an older generation and bought up on "Netiquette" I just cannot understand it when a load of people post queries requesting help and after a few replies the OP just disappears from the scene.

Surely it actually doesn't involve ANY effort -- even on a mobile phone -- just to reply and say "Fixed Thanks" to the solution that worked.

Mind you these days lack of respect for anybody else --especially BOZOS screaming on mobile phones in enclosed places like Underground trains etc seems unfortunately to be the norm.

People ARE willing to help solve problems -- but it would be nice to know also if the proposed solution worked --and even if it didn't then also to have information - and if you DO find out what cured the problem to give the solution (or Link).

If you've taken the trouble to ASK a question it can't be that hard to say Thanks that worked -- or Sorry that was no good.

I think if we continue going down this route where total lack of respect for others becomes routine -- We are going to end up in a HORRIBLE place.

At least where I come from if you see a stranded motorist you always stop and help -- it's just second nature -- due to the terrain and climatic considerations outside the capital. I'd imagine in the remote parts of Australia etc same considerations would apply -- or at least you'd call the emergency services.

Strangely enough on a visit to Central Russia a few years ago believe it or not the local people were magnificent when my car broke down -- they couldn't get the part but an old farmer managed to hobble something up out of a lot of old iron that got me to the next decent sized town / city with international services (around 500 KM away) -- I spent the night drinking a load of Vodka with them and getting totally drunk and was on my way again the following morning -- and I only knew about 3 words of Russian.

Those people were about as far away from "Oligarchs" and Mafia that it was possible to be.

Maybe I'm just becoming a grumpy old man -- but it really doesn't take any trouble just to say thanks -- and people really DO appreciate it when your problem is solved.

I still keep in contact with those Russians --and have even learned a few more words of the Language since.

Cheers
jimbo

I fully agree with your points. It is my observation on many forums that 50% of the first time posters never come back and of those that do, many never let you know how they made out.

Maybe the first time posters do not find their way back to the forum. That has happened to me on forums where I went for the first time and where the forums had an engine that I had never seen before. Even seasoned posters on other forums may have trouble orienting themselves on our forum. I have such a case right now.

For answering first time posters, it is the best to make a first response very short. I usually ask an additional question. Then you see what happens and at least you have not invested a lot of effort.

Yes, I totally agree because that is the most annoying part that you are spending time to help but also assume that the problem was solved, otherwise they'd come back screaming... That's why if I find posts with good solutions/info's, I always try to rep those to make up for the lack of consideration from those posters/thread starters.

it's my opinion that for most of them its because they are in a big hurry and post to 4 or5 different forums ,find the answer and and don't care what the helpers on the other forums think .this poster wasn't even a first time poster ,

i might not be the best helper but i have been doing it for years ,even got Microsoft MVP award for the last 4yrs because of my help on Daniweb.com .in the attachment i even loaded the program the user was having problems with to see if i help them figure it out ,no response ,i have been helping on that forum since 2003,way back in the day i was part of the malware team in training on TomCoyote.com ,in the early days of hijackthis was one of the first to have a program[only available through email ] that analyzed the hijack-this scan results, malware jung and program to clean it up got to complicated ,so i stay away from that section .only do it at home where i can take my time ,
and you can see the quote under my picture :hate 20 questions " that bugs me as much as people not coming back ,you ask for details and such and and 4 or 5 more questions to get a handel on there problem and they come back and ask another question and don't answer any of the 5 question you ask them

That is a possibility. I sometimes see the kids asking for advice on scholl projects. But that is not bad. They are doing their research homework.

Well, maybe at my age, the definition of 'kids' is a little loose. My own kids are around 50. Take it from there, LOL.
