New build shuts down randomly..

My first build and am having problems with windows booting extremely slow, running buggy and shutting down on me randomly. It typically shuts down during strenuous tasks such as gaming and installation, but has shut down in the UEFI bios, once. When I boot back up I almost always get to the sign in menu but after putting in my password it takes a good 3-5 minutes before the start menu pops up. Sometimes it'll load up to a black screen where I can only use the mouse pointer, and access the task manager. Wondering if it's my motherboard or if it's just a driver problem. If so, how can I fix it. TY much.
Running an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 with an AMD 8350 black and an Sapphire 7870 XT with two sticks of cheap 4 GB 1333 MHz ram.
Any advice would be much apreciated.

Most BSOD's were caused by the two processes below and that would explain why it takes so long to login:
smss.exe (Session Manager Subsystem and is responsible for handling sessions on your system)
winlogon.exe (Winlogon is a part of the Windows Login subsystem, and is necessary for user authorization)

  1. uninstall Norton. Download the special uninstaller from their website to completely uninstall it. Norton is known to cause lots of problems and BSOD's.
  2. Open the elevated command prompt and run: chkdsk C: /r /f. System will reboot, this will take a while.
  3. After step 2 done, Open the elevated command prompt and run: sfc /scannow. To fix any corrupted system files. Might have to run multiple times until you get a message: Windows did not find any integrity violation.
  4. Download Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool, burn to CD/USB and run the test. It is important to run it over night for at least 8-10 hours. This test might pass the first few rounds but it does not mean the RAM is good.

In my experience, random lockups like you describe are almost always due to bad RAM. Swap out the RAM and see if that helps. I always have "spare" known good DDR2 and DDR3 RAM that I troubleshoot with. Sometimes, the RAM will not work reliably in one motherboard but will work perfectly in another. Good luck!

Good point. However the BSOD's are not random as described by the OP but consistent with the 2 processes above.

Sometimes, the RAM will not work reliably in one motherboard but will work perfectly in another. Good luck!
True and sometimes can be fixed by manually set the voltage according to the RAM specs or even bump up the voltage a little bit rather than having the voltage set to Auto and let the BIOS tries to decide what voltage the RAM needs.

@OP
For new built. It is always advisable to run the burn-in test for at least 24 hours before attempt to install the OS and a lot of people seem to bypass this process, I guess they are so excited with the new built and want to see how it goes right away... It is better to isolate the hardware problem up front and will leave the trouble shoot business on the software only later on.
