Hello,

I upgraded from Windows 7 (64-Bit) to 8 (64-Bit).
When I had 7 it took about 10 seconds to boot, but now it can take anywhere from 2-5 mins, also it doesn't shutdown (I have to hold down the power button) and it never sleeps (the screen goes off but the laptop remains running)

Does anyone know what is happening and how this can be fixed?

Thanks a bunch -Jack

Since you did an upgrade from Windows 7. There's a lot of things can happen

  1. Outdated BIOS. Make sure you have the latest
  2. Old drivers that were carried over to Windows 8. Make sure you update the latest drivers
  3. Registry entries contains invalid values
  4. Applications are incompatible. Re-install applications with the latest versions
And the list goes on........

Windows 8 suppose to boot up & Shutdown a lot faster than Windows 7 provided if you are doing right. It is always advisable to do a fresh install to avoid future complication.

If on, try turning fast startup off: Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8.

Ok,

What should I do then? Format my HDD and do a complete reinstall?

EDIT: I have already tried to do the steps shown in the link provided and they didn't work

Yes, This would be a better choice. Make sure you have the latest BIOS updated.
and before doing this, run this script to make sure you have your Product Key available.

One more recommendation. Do not use Norton, it is known to cause a lot of problems and I've lost count of how many BSOD's I helped to resolved and all caused by Norton. Windows Defender is good enough and in addition, turn off autorun.

Win+X -> Run and type gpedit.msc

Administrative Templates >Windows Components > Autoplay Policies
, double click "Turn off Autoplay", Next is click Enabled, and then select All drives so that you can disable Autorun on all drives.

Be sure and uninstall Norton with the tool on the Norton site--assuming it applies to the Norton software you have.

Ok, first off thanks for all the help. I reinstalled 8 and it worked fine for a few days untill it started using 14Gb of RAM (with no programs/apps running). That only left me with 2Gb for my 3D graphics designing and gaming.
So I decided to install 7 Ultimate, with 4 tabs open in Google Chrome & Skype running I was only using about 2Gb.
So I'm just going to stick with 7 on my laptop, but keep 8 on my desktop since that works fine.

Once again thanks a bunch!

-Jack
