How do I move an app to the desktop (Mail)

I have a friend that has a new laptop and is used to win 7 but the computer has windows 8 on it. She wants the Mail app to show on the desktop. Is there a way to create an icon on the desktop that will point to the mail application?

I'd imagine that she could just go into the program files and make a shortcut of her icon and move it to the desktop.

Hello detaylor1242. Welcome to the EightForums.

You could download oblytile and open up the manager to create a shortcut of a metro app to the desktop.
Make sure it is version 0.9 not .8 It is free.

You need to make sure the mail app is installed or in the apps area.
Do you see it on the start screen?

the default Mail app on start screen will open in the Metro IE 10 and not able to show on desktop. If that's what you want.
If you are talking about 'Windows Live Mail' you need to download 'Windows Essentials'

After it is installed, right click the Windows Live Mail tile on start screen and click the option to Pin on taskbar

    No 3rd party application necessary.

    Hi there

    C'mon guys

He wants it on THE DESKTOP not on the taskbar or quick launcher.

Assuming you don't know the name of the EXE or application file I'll start right from basics --No registry hacks or whatever.

    1) Install the application on W8 as you would install any app on Windows.
    2) Go into the W8 Start screen and RIGHT CLICK on the application tile
    3) On the BOTTOM taskbar that pops up choose OPEN FILE LOCATION
    4) a Windows explorer (or file explorer as its now called) will open the cursor will be postioned on the application file.
    5) Right mouse click on this and choose SEND TO DESKTOP -- Create short cut.

Metro tiles can't be pinned to the desktop -- this IMO make METRO even more rubbish than it already is -- now I'd have things like Live tiles converted back into the Old GADGETS and bring them back to the desktop.

    "Seemples".

whats the name of the mail app .if it from the win8 store ,it likely will only run from the start screen, if you right click on a store app it will not give you the open file location option

    Hi there
POLEEEEESE PEEPS -- READ all the posts in the thread

In Mine (previous to yours) I've just stated CLEARLY (and English doesn't have to be one's first language either - although I've used it for so many years I probably speak it better than most Native Born Brits) that METRO APPS CANNOT BE PINNED TO DESKTOP -- understand ... Capice .... etc.

Metro operates totally differently to the desktop so this is hardly surprising.

Someone may eventually design an application to do this --Stardocks seem to have an application which can already apparently run some metro apps in a Window but for standard Windows this facility isn't present.

People WILL try and help on these forums but users should look at the threads before re-stating the problem. - Mistakes do sometimes occur but on the whole the advice you get on the W7 and W8 Forums is pretty sound (and I suspect the associated Vista one too --I don't have any machines running Vista so I never check over there but it probably works like these Forums too.

    Cheers

There are other discussions here about icons that move by themselves. Maybe the additional details I provide will help point to a solution. I have 64-bit Windows 8.1 Update 1. I divide my desktop icons into two groups. One group of icons is on the left side of my monitor and the other group...
I like W8 interface alot, but certain things don't seem to work. Like normally, you could go into the Start menu, and copy/move/edit/delete icons. But In W8, I don't see any way of doing this. The only options they give you is to pin. So the "All Programs" Menu in W8 is the Apps menu. And...
