Can anyone tell me if there is a way to tell if a Microsoft dvd is fake?

I bought office 2010 pro early last year, installed it the three allowed times. Wife got new puter today, I uninstalled the office from the old one, installed on the new. It would not activate, said it was invalid number. I called Microsoft and they asked for the key - gave it and they infomed me it was pirated.

It came in ms type box, has coa inside and looks like all other ms disks I've gotten - ????

Any info would be appreciated. I've I was duped so be it, but don't want to be a dupe until I am sure :sleepy:

Did they say why they believe it was pirated? Could they be looking a the 3 installs you already did with it?

They said that it had been activated six times. I had only activated it 3 times. This would indicate something is wrong.

There is an x16->>>> number on the back and the same number is on the front. He said this proved it was pirated.

He was not always logical in his info and was in the Philippines so just wanted to double check - if anyone knows for sure.

6 times is a pretty conclusive argument for a pirated copy, or someone swiped the key and has used it even though the copy is real. Either way your out of luck.

Microsoft has pretty good records. I think Ztruker is right - someone sold you the thing and had already used all 3 keys. From where did you buy it.

Okay, chatted with MS and they gave me this addy to know if dvd's are valid or not.

How to Tell

Guess what - I'm a dupe :) but glad I can help MS clobber they seller if they can, there is a link on the page to submit a report and they request the dvd, hopefully they will get him.

Thanks for the comments!

I REALLY appreciate the quick help on this board.

Hi EXSCENTRIC

I would strongly advise that you complete and send off the counterfeit report.

I bought a retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 2 years ago which looked completely authentic, holograms, COA sticker, packaging etc. I installed it on a laptop and it activated and was used until the hard drive and screen of the laptop failed.

I then reinstalled it on a different computer but it would not activate. Successive attempts produced a message that the License key was locked. A call was made to MS support. They told me that the key was locked because it was a business copy of software and should not have been sold as a retail use copy. They told me to send in a counterfeit software report, which I did. It took some time trawling through past records to find original sales receipts and sellers name but it was required.

The counterfeit report was accepted and four weeks later i was delivered a complementary copy of Windows 7 Ultimate.

Regards

:ditto:
Although it does say on this link:
Microsoft said:
With the exception of Product Key Cards distributed with Certificates of Authenticity (COA’s), Microsoft does not distribute products keys as standalone products.
How would they describe the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade product key that they emailed out to me then...? ;)

Hi there

Looks like it IS pirated -- so report the SELLER.
Even if the SELLER is legit the SELLER is responsible as it's their duty to ensure that the goods they sell have been sourced correctly and are not fake or Pirate copies.

another solution is to BUY an older version of Office - OFFICE 2007 -- it's not much (if at all) different from Office 2010 and you can get a copy for around 35 USD. There's plenty of LEGIT sources selling Old / Back releases of software cheaply -- for a lot of things you don't have to have the latest and greatest. OFFICE 2007 was available in retail channels so you shouldn't have any problems finding a copy -- and it still gets updates in the Windows updating process.

You could even consider the subscription version of Office -- Office 2013 -- but a) I myself am not keen on the subscription model and b) I just don't like Office 2013 which Office 365 is based on.

You could also try maybe a USE AT HOME version if your Work / College allows this facility - this is often FREE or just a few dollars for the DVD.

However if Ms has blacklisted the key then it IS Pirated -- Office is the most pirated software in the world which is why Ms is attempting to foist the subscription model on us -- so perhaps the best solution is to get a LEGIT shrink wrapped copy of OFFICE 2007.

Note some universities will even let you download for FREE

Here's one such link - you have to be a registered student though to do the download.

Franka: Yes, I was able to print out my receipt and get it ready for them, going in the mail shortly. I will love the comp. copy if it comes, but just knowing they may catch the creep is fun enough to help them. He had perfect score and high numbers on ebay when I bought mine, but looked yesterday and there are a number of negatives and all relate to office 2010 so hard to tell how many times he has sold my key :-(

Live and learn. Going to the garage this morning and see how many more I might have!

DavidY: Yes, with the millions of product how can they keep it all straight? If their products were as sophisticated as their security system we wouldn't have so much trouble with their software :)

I presently have an office 2013 that looks perfectly good and Chat says the key is valid but I have to wonder if it is bogus too. Think I'd better get it installed quickly before they resell that key to!

:) sure should have. The box was just like Microsofts, the key tag looked just like MS's and the disk as well - holograms and all.

I got my key for my Windows 8 upgrade this way too, but while I linked through to the sales page from the Upgrade compatibility checker provided on Microsoft's website, the receipt for my upgrade key indicates that it was a third party that I bought the upgrade from and not Microsoft directly.
