I installed 8 a couple of weeks ago and for about 2 days things were great but no more. I can not install anything. Not from Microsoft, not from any other publisher. When I try I get an error "The extended attributes are inconsistent" On some things I am told I need to be on the administrator account. I thought maybe that was why I was getting this issue but so I searched out and found how to enable the administrator and tried to follow that process I did the windows key + x step and selected command prompt (administrator) as directed on the Microsoft site but got a new error telling me that the program to run this is not installed. The command prompt? Really? So, that is as far as I am getting with that process. I am at wit's end as I have been fighting with this for days. I need my computer to work for me, I have things that need to get done and now I am way behind. I have no one to ask for help at the moment because all of my people I go to know nothing about 8. If any of you can offer suggestions, I would be eternally grateful. I thought this was suppose to be easy. So much for all the hype.

Hello and welcome!

When did this start to happen? And is this an OEM install of Windows 8 on a new PC, upgrade install on a current PC or a clean install?

This sounds serious, please answer the previous posts; they may help us.

Do you think your computer might have an infection? Have you installed anything at all (any Windows Update or driver) before this began happening to your computer? Does anyone else use this computer aside from you? Also, did you have some kind of protection enabled such as Defender?

I experienced this twice, in previous months, on clients computers. I found a solution which worked, on the Technet forums.
Possibly you have downloaded a third party theme, which included a "sound" theme. But, in any event, right click on desktop, choose "personalisation" and change back to a Windows 8 Default theme and see if it clears the problem.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.

Try a system restore hopefully to right before your problem began. If it works, then think about the things you did originally that might have brought the problem on. If the system restore works, then create a new restore point both immediately before and after you do anything of significance installation-wise, etc.,

Sorry to take so long to get back here. Last night I finally figured out how to activate the Administrator account and that seems to have solved all my issues. All I need to figure out now is how to give my regular identity the permission to install software when needed. If this is not possible it is not a big deal to do so with the admin account, though. It would just eliminate problems

My install of Windows 8 is an update to an existing system, updating from Windows 7. I purchased the special price deal from Microsoft a few weeks ago. I waited to install it, though until I knew I would have time to get used to it and work out all the issues and how-to's you always have with a new OS. Permissions, however, do not seem to be explained very well in any of the documentation I have found.

The funny thing is, I was following the procedure as outlined on the Microsoft site to activate the admin account, and had I not finally gotten frustrated enough to try a different approach, I likely would still be trying to figure out why it did not work. I hate it when the instructions are dead wrong.

I want to thank you all for taking the time to reply to me on this and sincerely apologize for not answering you sooner. I had a bit of a health crash and was pretty much out of commission for a bit. I will likely do a ghost of my system now that I have it working. That is, If I can get Norton to work. I really hate that software. Any better alternatives?

I was talking about Ghost, but I do understand bit Defender is really good software. I used to use Panda and liked it a lot, but if memory serves, Bit Defender is now rated higher, is it not?
