Disk usage constantly (almost) to 100%

Hello guys, I hope someone can help here, I've registered on purpose!

A close friend of mine has problems with the hard drive, I reckon. His disk usage it's always close to 80% reaching 100% several times, making impossibile to accomplish even the easiest things like listening music or watching SD videos. I've checked the processes and eveything seems right, cpu usage is very low. I can't figure out what's the problem. The notebook is new, 2 weeks...

I'm attaching a screenshot of a crystal disk report, it's in italian but you should be able to understand it!

    Thanks

    Hi there
Check out things like -- Page file, Hibernation (Sleep) options, Virtual memory and paging file sizes etc, start up services.

HDD on laptops can be poor performers but that is another issue.

Your computer should really have a minimum of 4GB RAM these days but some machines will work OK with 2GB if you don't want to run more than one or two applications together.

If you are editing large photo files (photoshop) check the use of the scratch files.

I don't speak Italian but from your illustration it would appear that your HDD is a SLOW 5400 RPM one with ZERO cache size which will be a really rotten performer.

I'd swap that for an SSD -- but you need to provide more info of your machine set up first to fix the current problem.

    Cheers

    Hello, thanks for your reply.
He won't swap for an ssd, he just bought this pc which is cheap but it's all he needs. He isn't a tech savvy, he just listen to music and surf the web so the notebook should not encounter any difficulties. So I know the hard disk is cheap and weak but it should be good for him. The notebook is an i3 with 4 gb ram, so no problem there too!

I mean, it's really weird that you start your pc, do absolutely nothing apart listening to some music and the song starts hopping and stopping for no reason.

    Hi there
i3 with 4GB RAM should be fine for W8.

Try uninstalling any 3rd party AV software first -- Norton is often pre-installed with PC's and it'a an ABSOLUTE DOG on W8. You can just use the basic W8 built in security "Windows defender" --It's more than enough for typical users.

I've seen so many PC's with third party AV software pre-installed on W8 that makes their machines run as slow as molasses. The days of Third party AV software for Windows that are used as home users are now IMO well and truly over (at least on W8 and above).

    Hi there
I'm 99.99% sure this isn't an actual hardware issue.

If you can I'd back his system up and the do a completely clean install if you've time. Take something like an external USB drive with you to store the backup images and use something like a bootable copy of FREE Macrium or other disk imaging program. Create also a BOOTABLE copy of GPARTED (partition manager) so you can SPLIT the OS away from the data partition --it's always good to have the OS in its own partition.

When you do the backup remember also the small system reserved partition --this will be the BOOT partition and should be the ACTIVE partition --the OS ("C") partition will be a Primary partition.

    Cheers
