1. Dump Metro. Not very likely.

2. Bring back the Aero interface. Not hugely likely.

To quote IDC analyst Bob O'Donnell, "There were certain decisions that Microsoft made that were in retrospect flawed. Notably not allowing people to boot into desktop mode and taking away the start button. Those two things have come up consistently."

What does Bob mean , "in retrospect"? He is on the right track.

I consider most of his points valid especially the one about Surface RT should never have been called Windows if it cannot run legacy programs.


M$ is about as deaf as I am but there customers are telling them to buy hearing aids by not buying there HYPE and leaving there money in there wallet.

W8 doesn't need to be saved. Evolution will morph it into what it needs to be .

We are currently in a position where the desktop is still the "Default" scenario for a lot of computer users. Given even a year or two this will change and desktops will be a minority (maybe still a significant minority but still a minority).

Ms needs to concentrate on making its OS available for NEW hardware rather than concentrate on legacy devices as its core product. Desktop users can stay quite happily with W7 -- why should they change if they don't like W8 -- W7 as Ms says will still be supported until at least 2020.

Of corse mistakes will be made along the way - but Ms IMO has made the right decision -- and really peeps for a tiny 5 USD (or even freebies) you can make W8 look almost identical to W7 if you must.

And some people like me who have got used to W8 do NOT actually WANT the start menu back -- I find using toolbars a much better idea anyway.

Windows 8 RT is an unfortunate name -- they should perhaps have called it some variant of Windows mobile or Windows CE. That much I'll agree with but I don't think W8 (or its successor) will be a failure. Wait and see.

What are you talking about - it doesn't have babies.

Any changes will be made by MS. They will be trying to respond to the market. In simple terms - trying to get people to buy this thing.

When I was a student doing my masters at Imperial College many years ago in the UK I used to work in the old "Houndsditch Warehouse" in the City of London near Bishopsgate on Sunday Mornings (8.00 - 14.00) and a stone's throw from the famous Sunday morning market "Petticoat Lane". In those days UK stores weren't open on Sundays but the Houndsditch had an exemption -- Sunday morning trading was huge.

I worked with a colleague and during the last two hours of trading we used to shift more goods than even the seasoned professionals and we took home very nice bonuses.

I still remember with enjoyment those Sunday mornings -- but it was hard work. A lot of the profit was spent in the pub afterwards !!!!

Jimbo - you could buy a laundry liquid that to many people smells vile (tho some like it ) , and you could put some perfume in it to overcome that. It isn't hard to do that.

I don't think many people will want to do that though, do you?

I think you will find if they get a whiff of it - they will leave it on the shelf.

I will try and translate it for you - how can he say "in hindsight" - when it was fairly obvious beforehand.

I am poking fun at the way he said it.

I wondered. Oops. Hearing things rather than reading them certainly can make a difference.

M$ does change its ways maybe they will bring the start menu back.

I'm assuming you have figured out how to easily toggle between multiple programs from the windows 8 start menu then? I'm currently a grad student and need to run and toggle between several programs at once in order to easily complete my assignments (I need Microsoft excel, word, endnote, powerpoint, dropbox, etc. while accessing many internet tabs ). I can do this from the default scenario (i.e. the "old windows" screen), but not the start menu where all the programs are located, creating an extra step for each program needed to complete my assignment; and the whole process seems basically unfeasible from the windows 8 start menu. If you have a easy solution for this dilemma, that would be great. I have been trying to figure out way to streamline the workload in such a way that it would be comparable to windows 7 for several hours now with no success. Thanks!

Bit late to get this in but I thought that Ctrl+S might do it.

Hope everyone can take a joke. I can't get this cartoon I once saw out of my head every time I see the title of this thread. I found a reasonably facsimile of it on a mousepad ad. So, when it comes to saving Win8, I think it will take the work of a higher power.

I don't know how people struggle with this, I don't, but there are two methods to do this, first is the old Windows way, hold ALT and tap TAB, this brings up a strip in the middle of the screen with a small thumbnail of each open application on your PC, keep tapping tab to move to the next program along and release the ALT key to use it or use ALT+SHIFT and TAB to go to the previous program.

The Windows 8 Metro option is to move your pointer to the top left corner of the screen and click to get to the most recently used application or when your cursor is in that corner a small box is drawn on the left hand edge just a short way down from the top corner, mousing over to this box opens the switch list where you can see all of your open applications and just click on the one you want to make it active.

Now I would usually go for the ALT + TAB method if I was typing something but do use the Switch list when I already have my hand on the mouse, but both methods are very simple.

Here's a tutorial on it though in case I haven't explained myself well enough.

I think I've said enough on this --

but a) using short cut keys you can do just as much or even more than you did with Windows 7.
b) create some custom toolbars and you have virtually the functionality of the old menu - in some ways IMO better than the complete global menu as you can set up "subsets" like most used applications etc.
c) Starting ANY standard application whether from the start menu / desktop / taskbar / toolbar starts in Normal windowed mode and you can switch between applications just like you've always done with the tab keys etc or Alt-Tab.

d) and this is often not realized -- to create ANY desktop short cut in Windows 8
1) go to start screen
2) right mouse click on the application and chose go to file location
3) from the file location right mouse click again and chose send to desktop (create short cut). Simple - easy and you've got your standard desktop short cut again just like you had before.

If you just put your mind to it for about 20 mins there really should be NO trouble in using W8 almost exactly like you used W7.

I'm really amazed at some of the difficulties I see reported on this site -- for technical people on this site who can probably hack into the CIA without giving it a moments thought or certainly people who are good windows gurus then using W8 shouldn't present any problems whatsoever.

As I said before if my Non technical 90+ year old Grandad can use W8 then most people should find no problem whatsoever.
