If running under UEFI on a machine with Win8 preinstalled, then see this tutorial: Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7.

If not, then use SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation (first 4 steps) and then clean install Win7. See Clean Install - Windows 7. Especially see this note it you have only a Win7 upgrade.

"Yes, you can do a clean install from a upgrade Windows 7 version.

NOTE: See this tutorial for how: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version."

Whichever, Win7 should run fine.

I have to agree that Win 8 on a Lenovo Laptop is a slow, a**draggin p.o.s*IT. I absolutely hate how dogged this pos is especially during bootup. I mean come on Microsoft. I have an i7-3630QM CPU @ 240GHz with 8.00 GB Ram (7.78 usable), 1TB Hard drive (no not ssd) fresh machine (3 weeks old nothing added) extras turned off in MSconfig and Ctrl+Alt+Del ( dumb separation there MS) and it still takes 4 to5.5 minutes to fully boot to a usable state. Are you KIDDING ME?

Make sure you DL the windows 7 drivers from the Lenovo site and store them to removable media before you try to install Win7.

I'm sorry, but there's no way a normal PC with Windows 8 will take 4-5.5 minutes to boot to a usable state. You really need to figure out what's wrong with your system.

I have to agree. Windows 8 is consistently faster at booting than Windows 7 on the same hardware.

Yeah, there is LITERALLY no possible way a new system with Windows 8 could boot that slow with that kind of hardware. You have software issues that need to be fixed first, as well as maybe learning the ways of the Windows 8 as well...

Hi there
I can't understand how that hardware takes forever and a day to boot. I use a much less powered small ACER aspire V105 11.5 inch machine fitted with an i3 -- much less powered than your machine -- and even BEFORE I swapped the HDD for an SSD performance on W8 was more than acceptable -- with an SSD it flies. -- I removed the installed W8 and re-installed W8 from scratch so got rid of all the crapware etc.

Lenovo is pretty good in general - I'd suspect that the bottleneck is the HDD -- the 1TB might be a slow 5400 RPM model with a TINY cache. Poor I/O will kill any system even a super CRAY.

I really would be surprised if a CLEAN W7 install will net you ANY performance improvement over a CLEAN W8 install.

Now whether you LIKE W8 or not is another issue --I can understand if you want to go back to W7 but one thing that even HATERS of W8 agree on is that its performance is generally much slicker than W7.

If also you swap the HDD in the laptop you could use the old HDD as an external drive with a USB==>SATA cable. Fit the laptop with an SSD and you'll be amazed at the difference.

I have a feeling just reverting back to W7 in this case for performance reasons will leave you disappointed.

Cheers
jimbo

I can boot from a live CD of linux and this machine is phenominal. I alredy contacted Lenovo about a new Hard drive as this is the only piece of the puzzle left. I have set up 4 of these same machines and two HP dv9000 with 8 and they are all slower that I would expect. I will do another restore to factory (3rd time) and post a video of that and the first natural boot if you would like proof. As far as "maybe learning the ways of the Windows 8 as well..." as Coke Robot put it is a little condisending. I have 25 years as a computer tech, several degrees, I have my own shop where I make a good living repairing pc's, macs, and linux machines. I have been playing with and breaking 8 for a little over two years now. I "Know" how to use it. I cannot see the performance increase everyone seems to be touting but I guess I'll have to take your word for it. By the way I went ahead and replaced the Hard drive with my older (9 months) Seagate 500Gb and did a fresh install of Windows 7. (yes as per instructions from microsoft about thier eUFI) and it rocks. I have tested and retested the 1TB drive and am going to send it back to Lenovo and let them look at it. I will try one time to do a clean install of 8 on the 500gb drive and see what happens. IF it is still "Slow" I will post back.

I am posting this as a followup and I want everyone to know I had no intention of hijacking anothers thread and I applogize. 1) Hard drive was fine according to Lenovo. 2) bought new 1TB Seagate 7200 and a 64GB SSD. Installed 8 on SSD and it was great, but so is 7. 8 on 1tb 7200 is slow initial loading ok after 4 to 5 minutes. 7 is like a throughbread on the 1TB so I will have to say that no matter what numbers may say my 8 is slower. yes both were 64bit, only drive was changes and no bloatware on either. I will appologize once again and dissappear from this thread. I will not reply any further so if you have anything to say message me.
