    Weird random Defender crashes. Help!

    Hey all,

Since yesterday I got these frequent random crashes of the Antimalware Service Executable that is used by Windows Defender. Now I know that Defender isn't the best antimalware program around but still, this shouldn't be happening. The crash occurs randomly while I'm not using Defender. Also, if I want to scan the system with it, an error eventually shows up saying that Defender cannot scan the system because the service has stopped (???).

I don't know what the exact cause is of these crashes. Yesterday I did install a Steam game that needed .net Framework 3.5 and its updates, Visual C++ 2005 and Games for Windows Live client (ugh..). However, I can't make a link between any of these programs and the crashes.

Beneath is the errorlog of the crash (sorry it's in Dutch). I looked for a crashdump but there isn't any.

Could anyone please help me with this since I can't scan the system with these crashes.

    Thanks in advance,

This issue has been resolved with the latest virus definitions (1.145.1490.0 onwards), which is now available via Windows Update. Therefore if you check for Windows updates again it should appear. There's a thread about it here:

Thanks a lot guys! Noticed a .1493 version in Windows Update and now the crashes are gone and the scanning is fixed. Should have searched better before posting this. Hopefully Microsoft won't do this again :P
