If your data on your hdd is more than 120 gb you will not be able to do it. If your data is less than 120 gb you have a chance and hope you have no data past 120 gb on the hdd. you will have to shrink the main partition so it will fit on the ssd.

Why can't you use a 250 GB or the like.
How do I shrink the main partition?

Shrinking a partition is not for the novice as you can hose your windows.
You can use any size SSD that will hold your system the price of ssds per gb really gets out of hand when you pass 512GB and you can find them for about $400.00 +-.
You will also need cloning software and most of them will shrink your partition for you.

I have used Minitool before. But, if I use Minitool it shrinks partitions down to the effective size used in the partitions. The question is after I have done this shrink can I expand the partitions after they have been transferred to the SSD.
An Idea I have (don't Know if it will work) is to put 80GB of rubbish on the C: and then delete the 80GB after it has been transferred!

You can expand the partition to the amount of free space on the disk without having to put rubbish on the drive. The more rubbish on the drive the longer it takes to transfer to the new disk. Windows has a tool for doing that I think it is diskmgmt.msc.

Sorry I don't think you understand what I mean.
In the pic attached I have 5 Partition sections. In each of these they will compress down to their bare minimums with minitool.
For instance 500mb will decrease to its minimum of around 135mb and so on. all five partitions will decrease. The problem is expanding them. How can I do that? Minitool does not have this facility and you cannot do this with Disk management.

If there is free space right after the volume you can if there is no space and another volume is there you cannot expand. Select the main volume and right click it will allow you to shrink and if there is free space after it will allow you to expand.

more info here Extend a Basic Volume

If you shrink the other volumes you will run into trouble and windows will not boot.

On a small SSD you do not want 5 partitions. You want 2 partitions at most - 1 for the OS and 1 for the data. If it were a desktop, you would move the data to a spinner, but on a laptop your only option is an external disk.

If you have many partitions, the small space on the SSD is not used very efficiently. If your current setup on the spinner has a tools partition, a recovery partition and a system partition, I would get rid of them. In case of the system partition I transfer the bootmgr to C:.

I found a problem. I have the OS 441gb at the mo but, the Diskmanagement will only shrink to 373gb. I tried to shrink it smaller with Minitool but I am afraid that the OS maybe unusable.

If you make no mistake, Minitool is safe. You may want to take an image of the partition before manipulation - just to be on the safe side.

Can I make an image and then manipulate the image instead!

That can be done too. If you use free Macrium, you can mount the image (double click on the image file). The VHD will show up in Computer from where you can shrink it.

Disk Management won't help because it cannot move the MFT which sits in the upper part of the disk. But Minitool can do it. It moves the MFT.

On the other hand, if you just want to restore a larger partition to a smaller partition, free Macrium does that automatically (as long as the data fits). You need the latest Macrium release for that.

I am at present doing a Windows PE Macrium Reflect disc. It's taking some time as it needs to install WAIK.

Goddamn disc wont boot... I decided to use another computer hooked up all parts and I am now Reflecting. Next Minitool compression.

Later on: This is difficult as you don't know if after all this it's gonna work!

I f you are tight for space, you might want to clean out the junk, uninstall programs you don't use and move a few things. There may be a lot in your downloads or pictures or videos etc you don'y use often that you can move.

As a matter of fact I am on a very tight budget here. I decided to put the image on a 60GB SSD instead of the 120GB. There's not allot of breathing space...

Why is Windows 8 so big?

I just checked now and C: says 51GB used and if I go into C: and highlight all the folders and click properties I get 28GB is that strange or what?
