Prevent lock screen password when monitor turns off

I have Windows 8 Pro, and a laptop.

My power settings say, while on battery, dim the display at 2min, turn off the monitor at 5min and put the computer to sleep after 15 minutes.

Is there a way to instruct Windows 8 that at the 5min mark, when it turns off my display to conserve power that I can avoid it going to the lock screen and then requiring my password? So, just turn off the display, but don't lock the computer?

I still would like the lock screen image to display if I hit WindowsKey+L. And I still want my computer to lock after it's been asleep (past the 15 minute mark), so the group policy stuff to "Do not display the lock screen" will not accomplish what I want.

    Hello Patrick,

You might check to see if the On resume, display logon screen box is unchecked in your screen saver settings. If checked, it can cause you to get the sign in screen like this.

    Hope this helps.

The box is not checked under screensavers on my machine.

I have confirmed this behavior on multiple Windows 8 boxes now at work. Apparently it's by design. Windows 7 didn't work like this, the monitor would simply shut off and then come back alive when the mouse was moved. Windows 8 will lock the screen when the monitor goes to sleep.

Wish I could change this, but I can live with it.

Odd. It's got to be some other stray setting.

On my Windows 8 desktop, laptop, and VMs, it will come right back up when only the display shuts off after being idle X amount of minutes just like you said it does in Windows 7.

From your settings, it should not require sign in when resuming until it hits the 15 minute idle mark and goes to sleep. From the 1 to 14 minute mark, it should resume since it's on the monitor turned off and not Windows in sleep mode.

    Brink,

Are your machines that you are testing, on a domain by any chance? Mine all have been thus far. I'll fire up a VM and see what happens.

None are on a domain. That may be why for you then.

It's not the domain that is the issue, my VM worked fine in a workgroup, worked fine in a domain and worked fine with all of our group policy objects applied. Next up is to change the lock screen image and then run all of the Windows update and see if either of those things trigger the problem.

Well, one more thing off the check list.

It'll be interesting to see what the cause turns out to be.

You can turn off password in pc settings, users when your laptop comes out of sleep.

    Hello Smurfercom,

Patrick is trying to get it to not require a password when resuming from "turn off display" after 5 minutes instead before the computer goes into sleep mode at 15 minutes. He still wants to have password protection on wakeup.
