Prevent lock screen password when monitor turns off

    Brink,

I figured out what is tripping it, but don't understand why. In the power settings, if I go into Advanced, it's the first section which says "Require a password on wakeup". On my machines NOT experiencing this issue, this setting was set to "NO", but on the machines which are exhibiting the issue, this setting is set to "YES".

Technically, turning off the monitor after x minutes is NOT "wakeup", that would indicate that it's going to sleep.

Here is the odd part though, on my Windows 8 machines NOT having the issue, if I go into advanced settings and change the value to YES. they still don't display the lock screen when the computer puts the monitors to sleep. But on the computers having the issue, if I toggle it to NO, the problem indeed goes away and if I toggle it back, the problem returns.

I've found 3 machines in our office, having this same issue. One is Windows 8 Enterprise 32bit, One is Windows 8 Pro 64bit which was upgraded from 7, and one is Windows 8 Pro 64bit right from a clean load. 2 of them are laptops, and 1 is a desktop.

    Now that is odd.

You would think that as long as the computer didn't go to sleep yet and only turned off the display, you should be able to move the mouse to turn the display back on without having to sign in again.

I'm not sure what would be causing the computer to lock or require password from resume when it's only turning off the display.

If turning on require password on wake triggers this, then it seems the PC is waking up instead of just turning back on the display. Did you triple check to make sure that those computers didn't actually go to sleep first or start a blank screen saver, then required a password to resume.

Yeah, I have the timer set to 1 minute "Turn off monitor" and when the monitor goes out, I watch the power light and the hard drive and neither thing indicates in any way, shape or form that the PC is going to sleep. And it wakes up pretty much instantly when I move the mouse, so I don't think it's asleep.

I've set one of the computers to "sleep" after 1 minute and the monitor goes out and the power light turns amber indicating that it is indeed asleep. Waking it back up, does indeed require me to enter a password as I would expect and desire.

This really must be a mixture of being on our domain, the software we load for work and something with Group Policy that is just confusing the machine. But I'm going to keep digging and see if I cannot get to the bottom of it.

Ok, I tested on one of the Acer all in one computers. I started with a format and reinstall. Everything worked exactly as expected. When I flipped it to "require password on wake", it still worked as expected..coming out of monitor shut off without going to sleep.

However, as soon as I put this machine onto our work domain, "the require password on wake" setting being "yes", immediately made this machine "lock" when the monitor would shut off. Changing that setting to "no" would make it so that the machine would not lock when the monitor shut off.

However, by toggling that setting, when the machine DOES go to SLEEP and I want it to prompt for a password, it does NOT.

So, I am just going to set the duration long enough that it won't shut off too much and I will simply provide the password (which is quite easy since I use the fingerprint scanner).

To bad they can't have one universal setting that will override all others to make it easy.
