    Need help with Samsung laptop

I have recently purchased a new Samsung series 5 laptop, and my IE10 icon in metro had disappeared, I had then refreshed my computer to get it back, and I did, but lost ALL of my programs. I have reloaded a few, but any programs that came with the laptop are gone. I don't have a control-center that my laptop came with, where I could change settings for my battery, screen brightness, and other options like that. Additionally, I am loosing hard drive space, as in, when I refreshed my computer, I lost all of my programs, however, I don't have any extra space than after the programs were deleted from my computer. If anyone knows how to get any of these programs back, especially the ability to change the screen brightness, please respond.

I would also advise anyone who wants to refresh their windows 8 computer to NOT do so, as you will loose everything.

I don't want to refresh my computer again, what I would like to know is if I can get all of the stuff Samsung put on my computer when I purchased it back on it, because that controlled my fan speed and screen brightness. I would also like to know what to do with the windows.old file on my C: drive.

I also forgot to mention, no OEM or recovery disks were made, no restore point was made until earlier today, however it was after the refresh of my computer, and I can't use it to bring my computer back to the original settings that it had from the factory.

    +1 to that.

My Samsung came with Windows 7 and I used something called
    "SW Update
Using the SW Update function, you can easily download and install Windows 8 device drivers and software."
from the website to put back the extra software after upgrading to 8.

I guess your situation is slightly different as by the sounds of it you bought it with Windows 8 pre-installed? But with any luck you should still be able to find the SW Update for your model.

Incidentally if you use the Win-X 'Power Tasks Menu' and select 'Mobility Centre' (probably other ways to get there too), you should be able to change the brightness and one or two other things (but probably not the fan speed, and it's not as nice as having a hotkey).

I'm a guest here and as such I have to respect the host and his house, so I can't say what I want to.

So I'll just say mistakes, mistakes, mistakes.

    Plenty of help available.

First off I'm perusing the Tutorials available here on this site. They are humungous. Enormous. Whoever put these together did it as a labor of love. How could anyone ask for more? *( I just watched a 27 minute video there about navigating Win 8. I already knew almost all of it but still picked up a couple of good tips ).

Second, my friends here are probably tired of reading my harping comments about acquiring the "book's".

Third, Windows 8 has a repertoire of discs to be made. Using some of these is essentially like wiping the hard drive. Others can replenish without bothering the files and 3rd party software. "Look before you leap".

Fourth, backup, backup, backup. Don't fall into the elephant trap. I use external hard drives to back up in case of a crash. In addition I have two other computers on line on my LAN.

Windows 8 also has a provision to stash your files and data on their servers.

There are independent company's that back up your data on their servers for $50 or $60 per year. They are advertising on TV all the time.

You can save your files, data, photos, videos to DVD, flash drive, external hard drive, SD cards, memory sticks, a whole cornucopia of tools available.

There are lots of really bad Bandido's out to get you. And they will eventually. It's not IF, it's only a question of When.

But if you survive their incessant attacks you are still vulnerable to the seemingly inevitable probability of a hard drive crash now that the hard drives are being called a piece of crap by Seagate, that only lasts 2 years.

There are lots and lots of very knowledgeable people on this forum with tons of good hard experience and expertise who are always ready to pitch in and help out. But I surmise that secretly they must be exasperated to see over and over the novice errors and mistakes due to lack of discipline and procedural correctness.
