Solved 4 issues after upgrading

I just upgraded to Windows 8 and am experiencing several issues. I've updated several times but these issues persist.

My Desktop is void of Icons. When I browse to my desktop and files folder all the shortcuts and files show up but don't appear on the desktop itself.

When I right click on my desktop I get the "twirly circle" for about 20-40 seconds before the right click menu shows up.

My computer freezes up every time I use the search function and select "Files." I have no problem with apps or settings but as soon as I move to files I freeze up and have to manually restart. I can search my files using the file browser with no issues.

Sometimes my computer won't recover from going into sleep mode by moving the mouse or pressing a key. I have to push the power button 2 or 3 times.

Did you do a straight up UPGRADE install or custom, clean install?

Also, do you need any help navigating Windows 8? I'm kind of known here to be excellent for that.

I'm guessing I did an upgrade install. I'm not having any issues navigating but thanks for your offer. Part of the fun for me is exploring on my own as well =)

Sorry to say it but it sounds like your computer doesn't have the necessary system requirements to run Windows 8.

But then you didn't tell us anything about it !

If your non-Windows 8 programs are still installed (except for incompatible ones), then you did an upgrade--which probably is the heart of your problems. Sounds like you should start over with a clean install. See Clean Install - Windows 8. Since Widows 8 is already installed, you may have to activate using one of the procedures (probably the refresh procedure) identified here: Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade. I am assuming you have an install medium--an install DVD, flash drive, or an ISO (which can be used to create either of the first two). If you need an ISO (and of course have a product key), then see the first topic here: Windows 8 Upgrade ISO - Download or Create. I am assuming you are not going to be reinstalling under UEFI.

You don't need to.
Since Windows Setup detects an eligible OS that has been installed, it is possible to reformat the partition which Windows is installed, as long as you format it in the Windows Setup itself.

Why some people need to refresh their installation after a clean install? Because some people may have:
-A blank hard drive with no OS installed (or eligible OS installed)
-Reformatted from 3rd party applications (e.g Partition Wizard Bootable CD, FDISK, DISKPART-RE)

1. He will need to do what I said in all likelihood--the refresh procedure most likely. Win8, per se, is not a qualifying OS in this context. Some get lucky and don't have to do the refresh to activate after reinstalling. I wasn't lucky; I had to do the refresh. Check out step 3 in Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade.


2. As indicated, some, probably most, have do do the refresh procedure after reinstalling Win8.

Thanks for the input! I simply ran the refresh function and most of the problems have been corrected. The only one I still have is that no icons are on my desktop despite them being int he dektop folder.

And Google just solved this issue for me =)
