    System Hangs when idle

So i recently built my own desktop and it runs fine except from a problem where the computer will hang if left idle for any length of time. I have windows 8 pro installed and again it seems to work fine except from this problem.

The PC is still running has full power and can hear the fans going but there is no response from keyboard or mouse to wake it up, the screen is still on and freezes at a certain point which i can tell from the time in the bottom right hand corner.

i have looked through the event logs and found what i think seems to be the problem causing the freezing but i have no idea how to go about it. Prior to every freeze i get these two events -

msiexec (3908) Instance: The database engine detached a database (1, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\AppRepository\PackageRepository.edb). (Time=0 seconds)

    Internal Timing Sequence: [1] 0.000, [2] 0.000, [3] 0.000, [4] 0.000, [5] 0.000, [6] 0.015, [7] 0.000, [8] 0.000, [9] 0.000, [10] 0.000, [11] 0.000, [12] 0.000.

Is it worth disabling sleep and hybernation to see if that is causing your issues

I should have mentioned in OP that all sleep and hibernation settings have been stopped, this occurs while the PC is idle but still running.

Has this been happening ever since your initial installation or did it just start? If it just started, my non-technical evaluation would be that it is trying to install something (ie, driver or update) and it is getting stuck in the process. So, have you installed any new apps lately, is Windows Update working correctly (eg, current), if you are using Windows Defender is it running and up to date, have you attempted to update any drivers lately that resulted in a failed installation?

its a new build so most of my installed apps were installed on first boot so i'm not a hundred percent sure which apps it could be, everything is updated.

    Hi dlavener,

So, if it freezes when idle, and you have sleep and hibernation disabled, can you tell if the HD is still running at the time of the freeze? If the HD is still running then maybe its a graphic driver/card issue but I can't technically link that to a windows installer issue. If I were in your shoes, I would probably try to change my power plan to high-performance (if not there already) and I would also try uninstalling your graphic card driver to see if this problem happens when you are running on the Windows generic graphic driver. Yes, I know, the screen resolution will be all messed up but it may be worth a try. Good luck.

Despite having disabled the defrag it still tries to 'optimize the drive' when the system is idle. Is there any way to override this? It's only started doing this again after I installed the huge rollup update earlier this week.
