Hi All –

I have two issues with Windows 8 Pro 64-bit that I cannot fix even though I have spent already many hours searching the net and have followed many of the suggestions offered.
The pc wakes almost every night and frequently freezes at restart – not every single time, but more often than not, and I’ll have to switch the power off and on and then the pc will boot normally.

I have so far not been able to find anything in Task Manager that could wake the pc and or fix the occasional freezing on restart.

I would be grateful for any suggestions of howto fix these issues.

Many thanks in advance.

Welcome. Changing you Windows update settings so that update does nothing automatically is one possibility. While it may not work for you, you could try turning fast startup off: [h=1]Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8.[/h]

Open Device Manager and go thru the list. Do you see any "Unknown Device" with yellow exclamation mark ?
Did you install the chipset drivers for your MB ?

You might try troubleshooting the freezing using Msconfig's Selective Startup to disable unneeded services.

And for the wakeup, I would disconnect all external devices including mouse, keyboard and Ethernet cable, if present.

Hi dencal, Hu Vincenzo -

Many thanks for your suggestions, but I have decided to start again, especially since it took me a long time yesterday to log-in the pc - it just freezes on restart - (never mind the wake up). Obviously, something has gone wrong when I changed to a larger-size SSD just recently, since the pc was working perfectly ever since when I first installed Win 8 on 26/10/2012 ...

I'll keep you posted after the reinstall ...

Action Center / Maintenance ... Change Maintenance Settings
Has a checkbox checked by default to Allow scheduled maintenance to wake my computer... I forget default, but its like 3am daily. I changed mine to 2pm so it doesn't surprise me in the dark.

Hi mikiep, Hi All -

I had already changed the default maintenance time to wake my computer to 10.00 - I just couldn't figure it out and since the freezing of the pc after a restart became more annoying - three out of five - I started all over again updating my win 7 ultimate 64-bit (I kept an activated copy) and installed win 8 Pro 64-bit. The only thing I did differently this time was to uninstall MSE before since I knew win 8 doesn't like it. I downloaded all the updates, set all the five maintenance times just like before, ie 10.00, 10.45, 11.00,12.00 and 16.45; added the quick SLEEP and RESTART icon to both the start menu and desktop and surprisingly the pc did not wake up the last two nights and window now starts in 31 seconds.

As I said the only difference this time round was to uninstall MSE before installing win 8 - I did a sfc /scannow check on the system and some changes were made, but I couldn't easily open the log file and don't know what these changes were.

I have been told that the latest update of win 8 created problems for many users - touch wood, not a single problem as of now and the time it took to start all over again was certainly worth it.

Thanks, and good luck to all of you !

Hello. Welcome to the EightForums.

Ok. Great. Problem solved.

Only to address wake up issue... (from hibernation)

I will offer this, as others might experience a similar effect. With hibernation, the pc can be awakened by mouse, keyboard or network.

I was hibernating (the pc) and suddenly found my pc running in the other room, even though I had not
turned it on. These suggestions solved my issue and will not restart while in hibernation.

From Win-X or select device manager, individually right click and select properties for keyboard, mouse and network.

Select the power management tab for keyboard, mouse and network.
Deselect the option to wake up with keyboard, mouse, or network.

Also, in my experience, if you move the usb to another port, it is necessary to redo the power management settings in device manager.

Well done for sorting it all out....If you ever do an sfc /scannow again all changes are noted in the "cbs log file".
These can be found as follows...C/windows/logs/cbs/cbs.log
Right click on each and send to desktop where they can be read and deleted afterwards.

Hi dencal -

I thank you for the info, initially I had looked somewhere else for the log file and told: Access denied! However, following your suggestions I was able to get into it - 22MB of info that made little sense to me, except perhaps toward the end the entry: Mapping package cache was successfully rebuilt. But, I am still none the wiser ...

Having run it once again, I was delighted that no faults were found, but I wonder whether it had anything to do with my problems of waking-up and or the pc freezing on restart ... I suppose I'll never know!

I don't believe it - I found the pc fully awake this morning - the first time after a complete reinstall of win8.
What I did yesterday - the ONLY change to the system was to install and set-up SkyDrive!

Where and how can I find out what actually woke the system up ... and fix it.
