Unable to take/change ownership of files/folders

I am running Windows 8 64-Bit on a new Advent Monza T100 laptop.
I am unable to make changes to Program Files (x86) which is very annoying as this means I have to install programs to my desktop.
When I try to move something into Program Files (x86) I am greeted by the usual 'You need permission to perform this action' message.

I have tried to Take Ownership of the folder using advice from many different forums, however my problem seems to be unique because I am not able to change the ownership from TrustedInstaller to Administrators.

When I click 'Change' the window transforms into this...

Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?!

Hello McNaggers,

This is the way it's supposed to be. System folders are protected, and permission must be granted by just clicking on Continue (like below) first before it is allowed to move or copy anything into a system folder. This is a security feature to help prevent malware from being able to have access to modify system files.

By default, anything from an external source (ex: internet or USB) must be saved to a user location (ex: desktop) first, then you will be able to move/copy it into a system folder if you like after clicking on Continue below.

Hope this helps, :)

I do get the 'Continue' option, but when I click it, it says 'You need permission blahblahblah...'

Also, I have tried moving files from the desktop to Program Files (x86), however the same thing occurs and I am not able to.

You wouldn't want to take ownership of the Program Files folder, but only of the individual files or folders in it that you wish to modify instead.

After you take ownership (option three) of the file/folder, you will also need to set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full control".

If you like using the "Take Ownership" context menu item from the tutorial below will do both for you automatically to help make this easier to do when needed.
