PC sometimes freezes when inserting a DVD

Sometimes when I insert a blank DVD into my optical drive, Windows Explorer does not show that the disc is present in the drive. If I then double-click on the icon for the optical drive, Windows Explorer hangs. When it restarts, all I get is a completely blank desktop and a taskbar that has no icons on it. If I try and shut the computer down via Ctrl/Alt/Del and using the shutdown option there, it just stays on the shutting down screen forever and all I can do is hit the reset button. No errors are logged in Event Viewer, so I am having a hard time diagnosing the cause.

This happens maybe 50% of the time when I insert a blank disc. The other 50% of the time it works fine.

I have all the latest drivers/Windows Updates installed. I have tried 2 different burners and it happens with both of them. Do you think this could possibly be motherboard related? I bought a new board a couple of weeks ago and did a completely fresh install of Windows 8 and it's been happening since then.

I'm assuming it works OK if you insert a DVD with data on it and/or a DVD movie; yes? If so, and you have tried 2 different burners with the same results, is there any chance you may have a bad batch of blank DVDs? This does happen. Just for kicks, take a blank DVD that is recognized OK, and try reinserting that DVD again. Now, find one that doesn't get recognized initially and use that one again to repeat the test. Just a long-shot. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I found the cause in the end. When I installed Windows 8, it installed all the drivers for my hardware automatically. Everything seemed to work and there was nothing untoward in Device Manager, so I thought everything was OK. But it turns out that the optical drive was connected to an ASMedia SATA port on my motherboard and I had not installed the ASMedia drivers. When I installed those, a separate entry showed up in Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers for the ASMedia controller and the problem with the PC freezing went away.
