Windows 8 freeze/hang (no BSOD)

First time poster, so I appreciate any help that can be offered, as I have an annoying problem - I installed Windows 8 on Jan 28 and finally got my computer back to *just* the way I like it about a week later. Since then, I have had random freezes/reboots (no blue screens of death) every couple of hours. The screen will completely lock up (no input response, videos will freeze, etc.), and then the computer will reboot itself after a seemingly random period of time (or I power cycle it). I can hit num lock or caps lock and toggle the light on the keyboard - nothing else works. It's to the point that I can't use it for anything productive, for fear of losing my work (I'm typing this in Notepad and saving after every sentence).

Again, no BSOD so no error codes there. I've checked the event logger, and all I can find are entries such as, "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly" or "The previous system shutdown at 3:15:18 PM on 2/16/2013 was unexpected."

I've updated all drivers, BIOS, and Windows. I selectively disabled every startup item and service to no avail. The problem does not occur when it safe mode (with networking). Short of reformatting and trying again, help?

I am having a similar issue. My screen will go black. Then restart after about 8 seconds. After the load screen it comes back with a black screen. I have to shut down my computer to have it load properly.

This just made me realize that my new harddrive was better then my gamedrive :/
So, as I was preparing to reformat, I broke my RAID (set up in Windows as mirroring, so not a true RAID, I guess)... and then I realized that the freezing had stopped. I put the RAID back together, and the freezing restarted. Broke the RAID, and the freezing stopped.

Thinking it might be Window's mirroring, I then set up the RAID through the BIOS/RAID controller, and the freezing started. Broke the RAID through the BIOS and the freezing stopped.

Obviously, something about mirroring/RAID 1 is causing my hangups/freezes. Any thoughts on how to figure out why (from the previously posted file, or I can post a new one if necessary) so that I can use my RAID?

From what I was aware of was when Windows 8 was released publicly new RAID drivers was a must.

The hangs started happening again even without a RAID, so I reformatted back to Win7, re-burned Win8 at 4x, and reinstalled... and the hangs continued. So I gave up.

Last night, I upgraded to an ASRock Z77 Extreme 6 mobo with a i7 3770k and things seem much more stable so far.

Just wanted to give an update.

.

So you originally downloaded Win8 from the MSN site or another site ?

Also, what is your antivirus ? Windows Defender, another, using more than one AV ?

Just by chance, I would do a scan with a 3rd party AV like malwarebytes or Kaspersky free online scan.

You have a powerful system and more likely there is a compatibility issue. If you have not, "google" your problem for other input. The Win8 Forum is not always responsive. You may also address the problem in the Win7 Forum. More expertise there that will reply.

Hope things remain stable.

Whenever I've seen random "hangs" like this, it's been "bad" RAM or overheating issues...bad RAM is more common. Sometimes, the "bad" RAM will work perfectly fine in another system. I had 2 sticks of 8Gb RipJaws RAM in my PC and experienced random hangs and "swirling circle of death" in Win7, I put the RAM in my son's PC build (defferent CPU and motherboard) and it works great in his PC and my PC hasn't had a problem since. I hope this helps...

I suspect bad RAM, but follow the advice the others have given here (test hard drive, etc...) and then troubleshoot the RAM. I hope this helps!
