1. minimizing Chrome when in desktop mode? I seem to have to go to Metro then click desktop vs, in W7, simply clicking the "-" button (or use "alt+tab" to cycle back with the arrow keys). Chrome doesn't seem to have a keyboard shortcut to get back to the desktop or a toolbar with the "minimize" button. Am I missing something or is this simply a poor design issue?

2. working around W8's inability to recognize or "talk" with POP servers? It seems unbelievable that W8 and Outlook can't work together if one's email provider uses POP and not IMAP servers. My ISP provider (cox.com) says it's Microsoft; is this accurate? And, if so, is a fix coming?

3. In Metro, the only way I've found to toggle between programs is to use "alt+tab" and then the arrow buttons or, even more awkwardly, move the cursor to the lower right hand corner and then click on the Metro "desktop", then click on the other program. I toggle between programs frequently, e.g., when I'm researching something and copying portions into my word processor, and I'd like to know the most efficient/elegant way to do that. Have a missed this?

Thanks, Richard

My Chrome has "_" button.
Why yours does not is strange...

The email in Window 8 does not use POP and I do not think that there is a fix coming.
I use Thunderbird for my email here is a link to download it is free.
Mozilla Thunderbird
I also have Classic Shell installed so that I can bypass the Metro start screen.
Welcome to Classic Shell

1) if you click on the Chrome tile, it should bring you back to the chrome browser. Win8 still has the same desktop keyboard shortcuts as Win7. <Windows key> + <D> will bring you back to the desktop. just hitting the Windows key alone will also bring you back to the desktop assuming you have programs already open. The Chrome browser still has the minimize button in the upper right corner.

2) Yes, the Windows 8 Mail app still doesn't have POP support by default. The current workaround is you send your POP mail (from cox.com) to an outlook.com account or a gmail account or a yahoo account. and then add that outlook.com/gmail/yahoo account to the Windows8 Mail app.

3) if you have a newer multitouch trackpad or if you have a touchscreen, you can do a left-to-right swipe to switch between apps. if all you run are desktop apps, then <ALT>+<TAB> is still the best option. there are third-party options available as well.

Very helpful suggestions!

Thanks, mates. The Windows Shell is an excellent addition. And, when I switched to "relaunch Chrome in ..." it gave me all of the W7 features such as close, minimize, reload, etc. Nice. What a great resource.
