    Files wont open

    Hi,
This is my first post on this site, so hello all!
I've transferred 'My Documents' from my old laptop with XP to W8. However, I can't open any of the files in File Explorer. There are various formats, although most are .rft & .wps. I can understand why I can't open .wps but why not .rft. I even downloaded the new version of OpenOffice but I can't open their files either. Now I've only worked with this W8 for 2 weeks so bear with me. Any help appreciated. robinpe

Have you tried right clicking one & then choosing the Open with option to select the needed program ?

Hi midab1. Yes, I tried that, this is in the box that opens: C:\Users\robinpe\Documents\the name of the file .rtf. Verify the correct path & file name have been entered.

Have you tried opening one directly from the program you used to create it ?

    Perhaps there compatibility issues.
    The Troubleshooter might help.

See if you can use Control Panel > Default Programs to solve your problem.

Thanks you guys, but I'm afraid I'm too new at this W8 to understand how you even get onto The Troubleshooter & Default Programs in the Control Panel. This whole File Explorer, etc. has become very confusing to me. I transferred My Documents over from my XP laptop by flash drive. A couple of the items had been typed with OpenOffice, so I downloaded the newest OO program but I still can't open the files. If it's something to do with "Paths" how do I work with that. I tried changing the heading in the document section of the File Explorer to C:\Documents and Settings\my name\My Documents, which is what I think you call 'a path' & was on my old laptop. That didn't work either. I know you're trying to help me, but you're going to have to lead me by the hand. Thanks again!

    Hi again medab 1.
I don't have a tile on my Start menu titled 'All Control Panel Items'. However, I do have a 'Control Panel' app, & I did as you suggested & put it on the Task bar. But I don't know how to open the page titled Control Panel/All Control Panel Items that you show. If I even type in "All control panel items" in the search box what opens up doesn't resemble the page on your post with all the listed things including The Troubleshooter & the other item. Help!!! Thanks again my friend.
