    Hello Robin,

Did you right click on the file you want to open with OpenOffice, click on Properties, and select OpenOffice?

If OpenOffice is not listed, then you would need to click on "Choose default program", and browse to and select the .exe file for the OpenOffice program.

Open with - Change Default Program in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Hi medab 1. Your pictures with directions are great & I followed them to the best of my ability. However, I still couldn't open any files. Could it be something to do with the correct 'path' that needs to be followed? robinp

Did you try what Brink suggested ?
He is pretty good at helping people.

I did try to answer Brink but I'm having trouble with this site. After typing out an answer to him I clicked on the 'Submit Reply' & nothing happened, then everything went kaput. This is the second time this has happened to me.
Anyhow, I did as Brink suggested & a dialog box opens with the 'Shortcut' tab selected. When I tried to select any of the other 3 tabs they wouldn't open & I got this answer: <The folder C:\Documents and Settings\my name\My Documents specified in the Start in box is not valid. Make sure that the folder exists & that the path is correct> I wasn't able to 'Choose a default program'.
I also tried out your last suggestion medab 1 with one of my Wordpad files & that wouldn't work either. Do you guys think it might have something to do with the right 'path' not being used? robinp

Create a new Wordpad file & save it to the Desktop.
Then try to open it in Wordpad.

Maybe the other files are corrupt ?

I'm considering deleting all these files. I actually transferred them by flash drive. And I did check that they opened ok from the flash drive itself. I transferred my email contacts & addresses with the aid of Windows Easy Transfer & they're all ok. Maybe I should do the same with My Documents? robinp

    Robin,

As a test, create yourself a new administrator account, sign in to it, and see if you have the same issues.

If you do, then you might consider to refresh or reset Windows 8.
