Its not red, you've probably been affected by malware.

Just goes to show how painless Defender is, I didn't even know it was there. Just like Windows 8 all over, easy painless and so secure you don't even notice it.
Odd, even people who don't know whether Defender is good or not, know that it's there.

I use the paid versions of :

Norton--Norton & Avast clashed so I trained Norton to ignore Avast.

    AdAware
    Avast
    & free-
    Spybot S&D

Between them, I get no viruses or other bad things.

I've had MSE catch a few things along the way and it's also received some fairly good reviews.

I used Avast years ago and got a ton of viruses, went onto Kapersky, then Zone Alarm and then onto MSE. No viruses for a very long time.

And now I'm on Defender, thanks Ray.

I only hope you make enough images for the day you discover reality.

Another thing one should do from time to time is run Microsoft Safety Scanner (I do this maybe once a month): Microsoft Safety Scanner - Antivirus | Remove Spyware, Malware, Viruses Free.

I just did some research and Windows Defender is nothing more than Microsoft Security Essentials bundled into Windows 8, where MSE was a separate download. It also directly incorporates the Smart Screen Filter, which is already resident in IE if you enable it.

PS: I think you will be OK with Defender and MWB
Would there be any advantage to using Revo Uninstaller Pro to remove Norton ?

Revo will not do the job. I don't know the details but I had a bad experience when I did not use the Norton tool - and I use Revo too.

I have read about every thread on here, and it doesn't seem to have a direct answer. I had Norton security and it is a memory Hog. When I dumped it, Defender found a Trojan that it had missed. I just uninstalled the trial version of Norton and I am unable to turn on Windows Defender. I have seen this problem repeatedly in the forum, but I'm still not sure how to get it corrected. Please note that I am very Windows 8 illiterate, so no explanation can be too basic . Thank you...
