    Can't turn off Read-only

    Hi

I hope I've posted this in the correct forum.

XBMC (my htpc software) can not write changes to secondary drive as when I turn off Read-Only it automatically turns back on again.

I can give further information but i didn't want to swap you guys with details unless they are needed, but just in case it is a windows 8 machine running as a HTPC and connected to a windows 2012 server domain.

thanks for any help you can offer!

Hello bulbous, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You are having some other issue since that is not read-only. You may be having some sort of sharing or permissions issue instead, but I'm not able to help with domain issues.

In Windows, folders cannot be set as read-only. Only the files in the folders can be.

Read-only box = Default neutral setting for a folder that is always displayed.

Read-only box = File is read-only. For a folder, it means all files in the folder are set to be read-only when applied. Only displays temporarily while setting it.

Read-only box = File is not read-only, or to set file as not read-only when applied. For a folder, it means all files in the folder are set to be not read-only when applied. Only displays temporarily while setting it.

    Hope this helps some,

    Same problem on Windows 8.1:
    1. uncheck Read-only, close and apply to folder and sub folders and files
    2. check properties again - folder is read only!

You need to change permissions in advanced security options.

That is disable inheritance & give yourself full control.
