    PC Settings won't stay open

Here is what happened to me in the past couple of days. I was using the latest beta drivers for my GTX 560 and apparently Windows 8 downloaded and installed either a previous driver or a corrupt driver and automatically installed it. So the next day I do my typical daily reboot and I get nothing but a black screen with no response at the part where I sign in.

So after researching on my phone, I kind of came to the conclusion that I described above. I downloaded Windows 8 today (since I did a digital upgrade from Windows 7) just to put it on a flash drive so I can refresh my PC. After refreshing my PC, I was glad to see the lock screen, sign-in screen, etc.

I have tried SFC /scannow, messing around with boot up services, and running apps.diagcab. Nothing is working! NVIDIA update components refuses to install as well and I'm sure other things aren't working properly.

You can try installing nvidia drivers from safe mode. And about the PC settings not opening, does it show the blue screen and the it closes or it just wont do anything? If it shows the blue screen and then closes try doing a clean boot only leave Microsoft stuff running from startup and reboot like that. If it works, start enabling programs one by one. I had this problem and it helped me.

It shows the blue screen for about 1 second and then goes immediately to the start screen. I performed a clean boot and it still acts the same. Another thing I just noted I can't do. I can't open any type of pictures because I lack the permission to access the file location. I can't change my Windows theme or background and I'm sure there is other stuff. I don't understand, my user account is the ONLY account and it's administrator...

All this because of a ****ing PC refresh, awesome Microsoft...awesome.

You might want to look at it for future use, including the very near future.

Alright well, how I can go about refreshing again or reinstalling completely without having to botch the start-up process or access PC Settings?

As it stands, it seems after trying EVERYTHING I can to fix this...refreshing or a full re-install is the only way to fix this. I personally went with a full re-install. Thanks to Brink for that SHIFT+Restart method in the post he linked me.

Seems like this is the only way to fix the issue until Microsoft releases something through Windows update. I also recommend that you turn off Windows automatic update installation to prevent a similar issue from occurring. I have it set to automatically download but to let me choose what to install.

Hope this helps someone else with the problem as I read a bunch of un-resolved cases with a Google search.
