Yep, I don't even let MS download updates. I have to be very sure an update is something I need before I do it. Even then I err on the side of not installing them.

Seems like this is the only way to fix the issue until Microsoft releases something through Windows update. I also recommend that you turn off Windows automatic update installation to prevent a similar issue from occurring. I have it set to automatically download but to let me choose what to install.

Hope this helps someone else with the problem as I read a bunch of un-resolved cases with a Google search.
Great news. Sorry it took a reinstall to fix it.

I've been noticing more and more that people that have upgraded to Windows 8 instead of doing a clean install of Windows 8 are usually the ones that having these type of issues. My guess is something incompatible from the previous installation carried over into Windows 8, and is just not playing well together.

That's ok and I had the same exact thought earlier today because I had Windows 7 Home Premium before switching.

You said: "I was using the latest beta drivers for my GTX 560 and apparently Windows 8 downloaded and installed either a previous driver or a corrupt driver and automatically installed it. So the next day I do my typical daily reboot and I get nothing but a black screen with no response at the part where I sign in."

So, if I understand your question correctly, then you don't want to let Windows update automatically. And, you become very selective in what updates you choose to install.
