Right click on an empty part of the taskbar then properties - try Auto Hide - the taskbar hides until you point your mouse at the bottom of your screen. Experiment with the other settings and look at the "How do I customise taskbar" help in blue at the bottom of the properties dialog for more ideas.

Mine is transparent. I don't want to meddle with it right now, but, a long time ago, but I have a solid basic background as my desktop. I think this is the simple default way to get the transparency. But, when I google, it does look as though a transparent taskbar is the normal default?

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
All you should need to do is right click on an empty part of the Taskbar and then Properties. This is what you will see.

Click the check box "Auto-hide the taskbar" then "Apply" and then "OK." You can also move the taskbar to a different location on your screen, but auto-hide seems like the best solution.

Having or not having multiple displays has nothing to do with auto-hiding the taskbar. Just check the "Auto-hide the taskbar" option at the top of the screen I showed you in my post. It is very simple.
