    Recovery help

I bought my brother a laptop for Christmas (HP Pavilion G6x). He couldn't pick it up from me until a week ago. It came with Windows 7, but he was super excited about Windows 8, so I used one of my upgrades for him. Yesterday after a week of light use, he said he turned it on and he gets a black screen with a blinking underscore. There was a screen before it saying to hit escape for options, but escape launches the Windows 7 recovery that I apparently forgot to wipe before installing Windows 8. My assumption is I screwed something up while upgrading, but I'm not sure what. Additionally, I had no time to create recovery media for him before he picked it up. A) Any clue what I could have done wrong while upgrading so this doesn't happen again once the problem is fixed. B) Is there a way to create recovery media for his computer, say, on a different computer that runs Windows 7?

    Thanks for your help.

I did not have time to make recovery media, and my brother didn't think to. I installed Windows 8 through the upgrade assistant, not through an installation DVD. My brother cannot boot up Windows to have tell it to boot to the repair program. I suppose ordering recovery disks is my only option given the list above, right?

    For Windows 7.
Pressing the f11 key during startup on a computer with an HP factory image will start the system recovery process even if the prompt is not displayed.
May be DISABLED by installing Windows 8.

I think it is Esc first, while the “Press the ESC key for Startup Menu” message is displayed, then F11 during bootup for the factory recovery option, if available.

All the responses that offer help on Windows 7 recovery: The computer has only windows 8 installed. The drive had a Window 7 recovery partition, that I didn't think to erase. If my brother is OK with having Windows 7 again, would running the Windows 7 recovery while Windows 8 is the only OS on the hard drive cause any problems?

It should wipe the Windows 8 installation and replace it with Windows 7.

To restore the computer from the recovery partition, follow these steps:
    1. Access HP Recovery Manager in either of the following ways:
    ● Select Start > All Programs > HP > HP Recovery Manager > HP Recovery Manager.
    – or –
    ● Turn on or restart the computer, and then press esc while the “Press the ESC key for
Startup Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Then, press f11 while the
“F11 (System Recovery)” message is displayed on the screen.

    2. Click System Recovery in the HP Recovery Manager window.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
