Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law, Art. I know you all have been through a lot of heartache in recent times.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your expertise and teach us through this great thread. You are a very giving man! May God bless you and yours.

Tony, Thanks! It's all a part of life and we take things as they arrive and remember to tell those close to us how much they mean to us... My wife's family is very close and my MIL is the matriarch of the family, so this will be tough...

    Tonight's 3DMark Benchmarks...

The GTX-650 really holds the system back but it still gets a pretty respectable score, especially for a non-gaming PC...

It's good to hear the good news about your MIL.

Sweet machine. Those are respectable scores.

    This evening's stress test results...

Thanks, Tony! Here is another stress test that I just ran at 4.6GHz. Look at the max temp at 100% CPU load. Not bad!

That's 150.8 Fahrenheit. Not bad at all. Those coolers work great.

What's the max temp specs on that i7?

Tony, I believe the max temp for the i7-3770k is 212 degrees F, but I don't know at what temp "thermal throttling" will occur. My goal is to get as much performance from the CPU as I can and keep the temps well below 200 degrees F.

I like this thread! It forces me to read on things I'm interested in but know very little about. Not that I've listed them all, but here's a few articles I've read. Not that you have to take the time to, for I'm sure you know this stuff and I know you're a busy man.

Thermal Design Power (TDP) Thermal design power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Then I see they've implemented new technology recently. I think the i7 has this? My trip temp is controlled in the BIOS.

Platform Environment Control Interface (PECI) Platform Environment Control Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Question: Is not the max temp for the i7-3770k (212 degrees F) the same as "thermal throttling"? In other words, you push something to the max before it starts to break down. In this case, within thermal dynamics, it starts to melt due to the heat created by amps or the resistance of the chip.

I would imagine that they test quite a number of chips to find the "weakest link" and that is what they set the max temp spec at. They most likely set a percentage of buffer into the spec as well. e.g. I know ladders, scaffold planking, scaffold towers, etc. for I've been using them for years. I know they are engineered to hold quite a bit more weight then specified, but I dare not go over the max. One gets a "feel" for these things after awhile. I'm sure you do with overclocking.

Could you not max the chip to 200 degrees F and be safe or would the chip not last long?

Firstly, I'm sorry for the title sounding like a hot shot scam. So I overclocked my system to 4.5 GHz, disabling only Turbo Boost. I also changed a couple of voltages. Before, I disabled not only Turbo Boost but also power saving features like C3/C6, EIST. At that time, Task manager always...
