Documenting my new PC (re)build... From Q6600 to i7-3770k

I've built systems over a period of time before, usually gathering up parts as the $ and the parts become available. Lately, I'm building systems over a day or two as the people use their PC's for school/work and they can't wait too long. I don't like to let systems stack up, so I build fast, but I pay attention to detail. I've built so many that this is pretty easy now. Working on old PC's is much more difficult because you never know what you're going to run into. The new motherboards are fantastic!

Yup, you are right about that. I've build a few pc's in the last 10 years. In 'the early days' it was always a chalange to get everything right on the motherboard. With all the different connectors, depending on the manufacteror. Nowadays it feels like it is more streamlined and therefore easier to connect everything to the motherboard.

    Good to hear that!
That's what I thought. The challenge is important indeed.

    Today's challenge...

I replaced the Noctua air cooler with the Antec H20 620 cooler on the church's video production PC. The CPU is a i7 980x, 24GB of RAM and you can see that whomever built the system really didn't do much in the way of cable mgmt. This Coolermaster Cosmos case is extremely disappointing! For being so large, the cable mgmt is pathetic and there isn't any space behind the motherboard for cables. The motherboard has to be removed to swap out the CPU cooler, which is also a big no-no for me! Hot swap drives is the only thing this case has that's cool...

Some "before" and "after" pics... I'm trying to show the Antec liquid CPU cooler and how easy it is to install and how much interior room is cleaned up for airflow and access...

    Great pics!

The Coolmaster Cosmos is huge in general... but compared to the Noctua you mounted!...

The Noctua cooler was replaced with the Antec H2O cooler as the CPU was running hot. The Cosmos case is huge, BUT with this particular version, you cannot run any cables behind the motherboard and you must remove the motherboard from the case to install the CPU cooler because there's no opening behind the CPU. This is the most pathetic "high end" case I've ever worked on and the fancy side panel do not stay attached so I have to tape them shut. Pretty ghetto, if you ask me...

There are still a few issues I need to work on. The front USB ports don't work and I cannot install any ASUS tools or utilities. I have an evening of troubleshooting this evening and the PC has to go back Tues PM as the church uses it Wed-Sun. I'm happy with the liquid cooler as the CPU is running at 98 degrees (no load)...
