Documenting my new PC (re)build... From Q6600 to i7-3770k

Thanks again, guys! It's been a fun project! Tony, when you're ready, I'll be happy to build a system for you!! We can order the hardware, ship it to me, I'll set everything up, box it up and send it to you - ready to rock!! I've done this for many people and they have all been very, very happy! I'm getting ready to build two systems, one for video production at church and another for the video director at church. I love building them as much as my friends enjoy getting them. I learn something from every build and I only settle for perfection, nothing less for my friends!!

The flame sensor on our 1st floor furnace stopped working so I took it off, cleaned it and re-installed it. Furnace works great!

I did some more tuning on the case and fans... What a mess behind the motherboard!

If all goes smoothly with all of my other projects, I may install Win8 this weekend. I'll be sure I have an updated Acronis backup image of my C drive in case of a problem. I've had Win8 on my PC before I "upgraded" it and I'm wondering how it will run on the new hardware. I know my apps are compatible, but I'm wondering about all of the drivers, utilities, etc... I'll be sure I have Win8 drivers for everything before I start the process...

When I did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro Upgrade on my newer computer, I didn't have to search for any drivers. Windows 8 had them all including one for my 8 year old HP printer.

Apart from fresh videocard drivers Windows 8 will most likely find/ have all the driver you will need. I didn't have to install any on my system.

This doesn't include special hardware connected to the system, for instance if you have a Wacom Tablet instead of a mouse (like I do). In that case you will need to install additional drivers.

Have fun installing and using Windows 8 on your new system. It must run super smoothly!!

Looks like I'll be building my son's PC this weekend, it really depends upon whether or not the local MicroCenter has all the hardware I need. I'm buying an i3-3220, ASUS 77-based motherboard, 16GB of DDR3 and a 128GB SSD. Everything else is already here and the videocard will be the GTX-660 SC EVGA card that's currently in my PC. I;ll either use a Radeon 7750 or a spare GTX-650 that we have in my wife's PC. That video card in my PC is truly wasted as I am not a gamer. Our son uses his PC for video and audio production work (school and part-time band recording) and he uses ProTools. His current PC is an Intel Q6600-based PC that is as far as it can go upgrade-wise and it will become my "test PC". I'll document the process and post the pics and description here...

It's so inspiring seeing an expert at work. I was planning on building a PC for the first time this summer if I get a job, but choosing parts and building seems like such a daunting task

I'm no "expert", just somebody who has done this many, many times and every time I learn something else! Building your own PC is not difficult and we can help you pick your components based upon your usage, budget and future plans. I tend to overbuild PC's because most people keep them for at least 5 years, so I max out the RAM, big hard drive, strongly recommend an SSD as a boot drive and get a good solid CPU/motherboard/RAM combo that will provide many years of service. My old Q6600-based PC served me well for more than 6 years and my wife is using it now. Buy quality and use it for a long time.... We'll help you out and you'll learn a lot and enjoy the process!

Just inherited an old Compaq Presario PC from a sister and am in the process of cleaning it up. I ordered a new Ultra 350 watt PSU for it, as well as a two port SATA to EIDE converter, so I can replace the current EIDE HDD with a SATA HDD. The computer actually runs pretty well and I plan to keep it as a Windows XP computer, even though XP won't have any updates after next year.

Do you need any RAM for that? If so, let me know what you need and I'll send it to you if I have it in my "spares" box...
