Documenting my new PC (re)build... From Q6600 to i7-3770k

    Tonschuh,
Thank you for the good info! I just downloaded and installed the file from your link. My wife has my "old" Q6600, but it's really the CPU that is 6 years old as I bought an Intel DG43GT board to replace the failed Foxconn board that was in the Dell when I bought it. I put a GTX 650 in that PC for her and she loves it. The GTX 660 superclocked is too much video card for me as I'm not a gamer, but I'll build a system around it and give it to our son as a surprise... Thanks again!

My next project... Rebuilding a Dell PowerEdge 1750 server

2 weeks ago, a guy at church told me that he heard that I rebuild computers for people at church and do not charge for my work and he asked if I could use an old server. Of course, the answer was "yes". This is a Dell PowerEdge 1750 with 2 Xenon CPU's and 1GB of ECC RAM and 2x80GB SCSI hard drives.

I cleaned it up, got the dirt off the fans, cleaned the heatsinks (solid copper) and reapplied new Arctic Silver thermal compound. I ordered 8GB of RAM on eBay for $24 and another 80GB SCSI drive for $15. This will be a "staging server" that I'll use when setting up PC's for people. I'm very happy to have it...

Great job with the server, Art! It looks really clean. How did you get the dust out of the fans? Do you use compressed air?

Thanks, guys! I use compressed air, KrudKutter (biodegradeable cleaner), scotch pads and lots of elbow grease! I clean the heatsinks and the top of the CPU, then apply the proper amount of Arctic Silver. As soon as the 8GB of RAM and SCSI hard drive arrives, I'll load Win2008R2 on it and set it up as a server and out it in the garage, on the network...

I have to say that this turned out to be such a good thread, Art. Excellent all around. I certainly learned a lot.

I'll be retiring this summer. I plan on building my own rig of which I've never done in about a year. Id like it to be a "cooker" like yours. Sweet machine!
