My wife has a new Gateway laptop with win8 pre-installed. This is my first experience with Windows 8. I've been emailing with the Gateway (Acer) support people about the problem of how to boot from a CD. Of course, every time I write, a different person responds, so there's no continuity, and I'm also pretty sure that some of them really don't know what they're doing. Regardless, here's what I've gotten from them and what I've found from experience:
In order to boot into Windows 8, the BIOS has to be set to boot into UEFI. But in UEFI, you can't boot from a CD/DVD, regardless, no matter what, it aint happening. (One of the Acer people told me to change the boot order so that DVD is first, above Windows boot menu, but I did that and it didn't change anything.)
In order to boot from a CD/DVD you have to change the BIOS from UEFI to "legacy bios." Once you do that, you can boot from a CD but you can't run Windows8. If you don't have a bootable CD/DVD in the drive, the computer won't boot at all, it just keeps saying to put a bootable disk in the drive.
Bottom line, it doesn't matter how you set the boot order. If you choose UEFI in BIOS, you can run Win8 but can't boot from an optical disk. If you choose "legacy BIOS", you can boot from an optical disk but can't run Win8.
Does anyone know how to change this?
Thanks
