Any partition will show red if the freespace is below 10%. The only way to avoid the red coloring is to keep the data at 90% -1 Byte. But the red coloring has no real consequences from an operational point of view. You just have to watch that you do not feed the partition with data beyond it's capacity. But then you'll be warned again.

Just to clarify... sometimes the recovery partition or readyboost is over 90% full and shows red bar. There is a registry key that can be changed, LowDiskMinimumMBytes And a setting in Action Center under maintenance for drive status...

You need space on the drive for the swapfile, pagefile, hiberfile.sys. The warning is shown so you can clean files to make space. Use the built in tools in windows to clean the disk. I don't recommend you start changing registry entries, but you can find it in regedit by using search tool for LowDiskMinimumMBytes, the setting is 1 and can be changed to 0. There are several places to check, see this tut for vista, should be same in Windows 8. Low Disk Space Warning in Vista

You could buy a large thumb drive & move 90% of the stuff off your computer to it.

A computer is like the human brain.

90 % FREE space makes things work a whole lot better.

90% free space is also highly inefficient. Especially for what I assume is a SSD.

For a spinning disk, it is irrelevant. For a SSD, it would have an impact (because of the Garbage Collector).

    See this-

Top 10 Reasons Why Your Computer Is Slow

Free Space. One of the keys to a well performing computer is maximum free space. The more free space Windows has, the quicker it can do its chores. More importantly, without ample free space on the disk, Windows can go into a critical condition called thrashing. Thrashing occurs when both memory and the disk are full. Windows tries to move things from memory to disk to free up memory, but since there is insufficient space, the system begins thrashing.

The secret is to remove large files from your hard drive as soon as possible. Remember that video you watched two years ago? Once you watch it, you should delete it or store it in another place.
