I currently have a HP laptop that has Windows 7 Pro on it. I am due to take delivery a New Dell laptop which has Windows 8 Home. I have just discovered that this version will not allow me to remote desktop from work to my home laptop as my Windows 7 Pro does.

Can you advised me the best way of getting Windows 8 pro onto the new PC with losing all the install software the comes with. I know I can just purchase Windows8 pro but will this not wipe out all the install programs?

Thanks in advance for you help.

You are very welcome. Looks like $99.99 U.S. currently at Newegg--possibly for non-OEM upgrade. Pricing is hard to find. I have found a price of $69.99 U.S.--might be OEM--can't tell.

you can buy it direct from MS for about $69.. but unless you REALLY LIKE Win8, I wouldn't waste my money, I'd go back to Win7... and for your question regarding wiping out old info , no, it won't wipe any files unless you tell it to do a clean install.. it asks if you want to maintain all your pics and documents, and old settings.. that leaves everything you had and just installs PRO ...

The 8 pro pack is now $99 after the low priced offers expired at the end of January.

Yes, it costs $99 to go from Windows 8 to Windows 8 pro, when previously you could upgrade Windows XP Home to Windows 8 Pro for $40.

yes, I bought mine about 3 weeks ago direct from MS.. much cheaper then than now.. got a new apple ? thing for Christmas, about $800 or $900 worth, tried it, HATED it.. took it back, took the money and bought a winch for my jeep.. I don't have that touchy feely crap on my phone, don't do texting, don't like the idea I couldn't just load OFFICE or any of my programs I was used to, I'm old school IBM computer, take them apart blind folded, I have every disc all the way back to the commodores' in fact, just gave away a commodore, printer, and all a month ago.. don't know why I've kept all the discs, the originals are actually floppys and 3 1/2s.. got all the older Office programs, and so forth..

What's wrong with the free Real VNC?
You can access through a browser using Java, so a locked down work computer can still access.

Free VNC costs less than the 8 Pro upgrade.

    Too many systems and combinations!
Well, VNC is really only useful on a local area network. VNC's cursor lag is virtually unusable over the internet.

The Windows 8 Pro Pack is still available in boxed versions (in the UK at least) which undercut the price on the Microsoft website.

So for instance it's £39.99 here (if you buy online, anyway):
MICROSOFT Windows 8 Pro Pack Deals | Pcworld

But £99.99 from Microsoft here:
Add features - Microsoft Windows

So it may be worth looking online to see if there are still similar deals going where you are. I imagine those prices won't last long though.

I have just purchased Windows 8 Pro from John Lewis, my thinking was because it was the same price as the pro pack I thought it better if in future I needed to upgrade another system which had windows 7 or xp I could use it. Will it be ok to use, or do I have to buy the pro pack i can still take it back.

What is the differnace form the pro pack and windows 8 pro

another thing I noticed about win8, it is slower than molasses booting up.. stupid little circles go around and round.. everything seems to take forever on it.. my computer used to be fast with 7.. and I have no idea what VNC is?
