I have recently installed win 8 on my laptop. It has crashed after installing MS Office Home & Student 2007.
It will not repair automatically or any other way. I have spent hours on line and discover that I need to change the boost sequence and have boot to disc as first option. I have a Compaq Presario CQ60. I went on their help line and they phoned me to say it would cost £110.00! All sorts of freebies included but not the answer. I can not afford £10.00 let alone £110.00 Is there anyone who can help me I am desperate and very depressed.

Does it fail to even get to the boot screen?

Could you describe in more detail on how it boots up, how it crashes, how far it boots, and when it crashes?

It starts up with the screen 'Preparing automatic repair' but doesn't do it. Then Diagnosing your computer - but doesn't do it. Then finishes on Automatic Repair screen with two options; Shut Down and Advanced options, which are - exit and continue to windows 8 - this does not work, Troubleshoot - refresh or reset your PC or use advanced tools - none of these work. Nor does starting with the disc in - it always goes to the screens as described above. I spent hours talking to a MS tech and the conclusion was that it should be configured to boot to disc (E) as first option - but how?

Do you have the Windows 8 installation DVD on hand?

A DVD correct or USB drive?

I believe on that Compaq model, I think you will need to hit F11, F12, or Esc when you first power on the computer and see the BIOS screen. Ideally, you should get a boot menu to change the boot option to the E drive or whatever the DVD drive is, or USB drive is if you're using one.

Thank you. Using the F11 or F12 key did the trick. I was able to navigate to an option for a clean install. This worked fine. It means of course that any data you have is lost, but fortunately I had saved my stuff on DVD's prior to trying to install Win 8. The mystery is why it crashed and became so unstable. Was it something that crept in to the win 8 download? We may never know. If you have any doubts about installing Windows 8 I think it is well worth it, even though the special offer may be over. Thanks folks for your patience and help, I am very grateful.
