    Windows 8 boots to Bing

When I boot up my Win 8 pc it will load up Bing. It will ask me if I want Bing on my homepage, and I always select no. Any ideas on what causes this?

    Welcome to EightForums, Jim.

Did you select a home page in browser internet options after booting?

Hello Jim, and welcome to Eight Forums.

This sounds like it is Bing Desktop if you installed it in Windows Updates.

If so, then you can uncheck the "Launch Bing Desktop when Windows starts" option from step 2 in the tutorial below if you don't want Bing running at startup anymore.

The Bing homepage is what is set to use for your desktop background by default unless you don't want it using step 3 in the tutorial below.

    Hope this helps,

I checked what you suggested, and did not really see that setting. I rebooted and it worked correctly, so lets hope for the best.

Well, it started booting to bing again. I thought maybe it was a Metro thing, so I set classic shell to boot to the desktop, but no luck there. It starts to go to go.microsft.com then redirects to Bing.

Check the same settings above to see if they may have been reset after an update.

If that's not it, then double check your startup items using the tutorial below for anything to do with Bing, and either disable or delete it.

Startup Items - Manage in Windows 8
Today I booted up my pc, and it did not go to Bing. I checked startup in Task manager, and there was no mention of Bing in it. I also do not have C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\BingDesktop\themes folder. I do have show hidden files enabled.

When I check settings on the Bing page I do not get the same options you do. I do not have a gear next to the search box, but a wrench instead. I click on that it only gives the three options, and none of them match what is shown. If I click on the gear above the picture in Bing I go to the settings page, and I could not find the options shown.

So, for now it appears to be working normally.

    Jim,

It sounds like you may have an older version of Bing installed. Double check you Windows Updates to make sure that you have them all installed.

Afterwards, double check to see if you have the settings in Bing Desktop to turn it off.

I have found a way to keep my pc from booting to Bing. I did not know why sometimes it would, and sometimes it wouldn't. If the router is already on, or I wait a minute or so before I turn my pc on it will not go to Bing. If I turn my router on and then the pc right away, it will go to Bing, or at least attempt to. Sometimes it will come up page not found. Since they are on the same outlet strip I will just wait a minute, or until the router is up. Don't know why, but at least I have found a solution.

I do not know why this would make a difference, but I have tried this several times over the past week and it always works out the same.
