Solved HP notebook with GPT partition table

I need some guys, i brought an HP Pavilion G6 and it comes with an GUID partition table (GPT), EFI and Secure Boot. However i need an MBR partition table, so i tried disk managerment but the option "convert to mbr" is greyed out and when i run the "diskpart - list disk - select disk 0 - convert mbr" i get an error "cannot convert a partition which has a pagefile on it" (disabling the pagefile didn t helped).

I guess my only other option is to format it, but the notepad comes with an lincesed win8 which i dont wont to loose. So what are my options? I dont ave the CDs, as it s HP packet.

Take a look at the GPT table

--

Update:
I ve successfully formatted my Notebook. All i had to do is enter legacy mode, disable secure boot and boot from the Windows 7 DVD. So if you ave no intention using Win 8 it won t be a problem to "downgrade" in an UEFI/EFI System.

Usually, computers with a recovery partition come with a utility to make recovery disks. I'd suggest using that to make the disks.

Why do you need an MBR partition?

Yes, HP Recovery Managers offers "Media Recovery Creation". Whats the process of it? Do i need a 3rd party software for disk creation and then install those dvds?

I need an MBR setup for disc encryption.

It would probably be easier to upgrade to Windows 8 Professional, which includes full disk encryption (Bitlocker) that works with GPT tables. An upgrade can be done online. I use bitlocker, and it works very well.

I don't trust bitlocker at all, would rather stay with my prefered enc type. So i m stuck here with this right?

Going to MBR is a bad choice:
-you need to disable UEFI & SecureBoot and enable legacy mode.
-you need to re-format the entire drive
-reinstall the OS on MBR

GPT is way better and all works well.
I'm not gonna go back to MBR, not on default GPT machine because It's too much work and GPT has more advantages anyway.
All encryption works, but I don't need any... also depends what (3rd party?) program you use that needs MBR for encryption.

Why don't you trust bitlocker? It's very stable and secure (so long as you take certain steps, like using a TPM chip, and don't hibernate your computer, and disable any Firewire port you may have, but those issues are there for other full disk encryption as well).

Not even Microsoft can recover a bitlocker volume. If they could, we would know about it, because the government would have used it in various terrorist incidents where the suspect had encrypted their drives with Bitlocker.

Of course the paranoid would say that the government would never admit to that, which would also mean the could never prosecute anyone based on it, so it doesn't matter either way.

Also keep in mind that on MBR, one disk will only have a max of 4 primary partitions allowed from which Win8 uses 3 by default so dualbooting will be more problematic in this case.

Without UEFI or SecureBoot, all sort of malware can boot before you even see the boot screen and that makes security lower even if you encrypt your disk.

GPT can have up to 128 primary partitions on a single disk.

It s TrueCrypt, free and it offers AES+Serpent+Twofish ecryption.

How to disable UEFI nd Secure Boot on this Notebook?
Whats the difference anyway? I used MBR for years nd it was allways stable and secure. I dont need 100+ partitions just one for the system and the second for backup.

I really don't understand why you want to go to the huge hassle of doing this, probably spending days if not weeks getting everything right, when you can have Bitlocker installed and running in minutes. Multiple encryptions is not any more secure than a single secure encryption (there are tons of articles from encryption experts like Bruce Shneier on this), and Bitlocker also uses AES.

Trust me, I am sympathetic to user privacy, just as you are. I too was skeptical of Bitlocker at first, but I did a lot of research on it, and it turns out to be very well reviewed by cryptography experts, and you don't have to destroy the benefits of UEFI to get it. SecureBoot is a must when using any kind of full disk encryption, otherwise a piece of malware will completely destroy your data when it tries to take over your boot process. Unlike a normal disk, you can't recover an encrypted volume if something like that happens, so it's important to keep your boot process secure.

It's still a lot of work...

I'm not gonna get involved in this because it's risky and you can loose all data.
Make backups first.

As I said you'll need to wipe everything out on that disk in order to switch to MBR. Not recommended and I don't even like the idea, I know what it is to loose data and waste time on poor managed partitions.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Mystere so all those ppl making fun of it on cryptocat re just nuts? Even if it s that secure as an the AES+Serpent+Twofish, it s still cost money nd i don t ave money atm.

Like noted above i don t ave important data on it, it s brand new just the lincense is important to me. Nvm i ll contact HP bout it, go from there on.

Thanx everyone

Most people who claim to know a lot about cryptography generally don't. It's a complex subject. So yeah, dudes hanging out in some forum making fun of things probably are just nuts.

Still, you don't have to worry about your key. It's in the bios. When you reinstall, there Is no need (or ability) to re-enter the key, it just works.

I respect his choice. It's not a matter of win or lose.
Even if it's more difficult to get running, MBR is possible on pre-installed default GPT machines.
(if you know how to format drives and install OSes then you can go further than this)

It's possible, so long as the laptop's bios contains a CSM (compatibility service module, or legacy bios module). It's not a requirement for UEFI, so I would not assume that there will always be one, although I have never seen one without yet.
