Not enjoying the format of windows 8

My mouse moves to the left as I am browsing the web or typing a word document and completely switches me to see the apps. This design is frustrating and annoying. How do I lock the screen so that I don't keep going back to the apps I will never care to look at?

Designed horribly... must have seemed great when first designing... but not for a laptop. Why mess with a great product? Don't fix what isn't broken....sheez!

Feel sorry to know that. Even your username says so.

Read some tutorials on manipulating windows 8, unpin all unused app tiles as possible. Hope you will hate it less once you are getting fond of it.

If your mouse is drifting, that's not the OS. You more than likely need to update the mouse with the latest drivers from manufacturer’s website. But it could be any number of other things like the surface you use the mouse on or you have the mouse speed set to high. Let us know when you figure it out, it could help someone else.

No, if you're using a new Windows 8 laptop PC, that app switching gesture happens when you drag your finger from the left side of the touchpad inward, do it from the right, the Charms bar appears. Do it from the top or bottom, the app command bar appears. Those are four of seven touch gestures Windows 8 enables on touchpads such as yours.

Windows 8 isn't horribly designed, one must figure it out first with some amount of knowledge before hand.

Best advice to give, don't move the pointer around from the far left edge of the touch pad. If it does annoy you to no extent, open the Charms bar ( and C, or swipe in from the right), hit Settings, then PC Settings, then hit General and you'll find the option of When I swipe from the left edge, switch directly to my most recent app. Or, you can just turn off app switching in general to fully disable it. Disabling the recent app switch will just open the app bar so you can click on whatever.

It strikes me as that you need some help with Windows 8. I suggest to ask questions. We're friendly, we won't bite.

Actually, Windows 8 doesn't enable any gestures on touchpads. This is the Synaptics driver that emulates them. You can turn it off in the driver settings. Honestly, I think the behavior that Synaptics enables by default is stupid. They should either disable this by default, or require some kind of function key combo or something.

Amen, and they should disable tap to select by default.
