I've had my laptop for about a month now and when I first got it I did something (and I don't remember what at the moment) that said I needed to add the media center pack. Anyway, whatever I did said I needed to get a license key for the media pack. Well, Microsoft just emailed me my key today but I don't really know what to do with it. How do I go about installing the media pack so I can enter the key?

Hello Brian,

Since you already have your Media Center key, you could use step 2 in the tutorial below to add Media Center. :)

Okay, I did this, but ran into a problem. When I enter the code it says "this key will not work." It goes on to say re-enter the code or get another one if it doesn't work. Well, I checked and rechecked, and re-entered the code, but it says the same thing. It just won't work. In the email from Microsoft it did say the key expires on Jan 31, but it's only the 26th. Any suggestions or reasons why it's not working?

The key might be case sensitive.

Brian,

In addition, have you used this key on any other computer? You only get one key per email address. If you register for another key using the same address, you will still only get the same key again.

Double check to make sure that you didn't mistake say an O (letter) for 0 (number) etc.... with the others.

Well it was in all caps, so that is what I used. Just for the heck of it I went back and tried lower-case, still notta. Thanks, though!

This got my hopes, lol. But then when I went back and checked my key I realized that it has no O or 0's. I guess I'll just request a second key from an alternate email address. Thanks for all the help just the same though!

You do realize that the key is only good for Windows 8 Pro not Windows 8.

Note   Note
If you have Windows 8 Pro installed, then you can add Windows Media Center by buying the Windows 8 Media Center Pack.

If you have Windows 8 installed, then you will need to buy the Windows 8 Pro Pack to have Media Center added and all the features of Windows 8 Pro.

Alright, I think I should be embarrassed to admit this; heck, I know I should be. No, I did not realize that. I have Windows 8, not Windows 8 Pro. So I guess this means I have to cough up the cash, right?

And for the record, I just received my second key that was sent to my alternate email, and it won't work either. So I assess that labeeman's point is accurate. The problem is that I don't have W8 Pro.

Yep, that would be the problem then. You can only do that in Windows 8 Pro. Otherwise, you would have to purchase the Windows 8 Pro Pack to have Media Center added and all the features of Windows 8 Pro. :(
