Well it's 50/50 I would say that buy windows 8 license at least as it only 14,99 or 29,99 and install it later, or you could take full backup of your current windows install and try if those windows 7 drivers still install on windows 8.

It all depends on your personal preference. However I don't believe the system specs you mentioned would be good to run Window 8 on you might want to consider upgrading your specs first.

You can install it as a second OS and try it first before making any final decisions.

Try running the win8 upgrade assistant. Lots of older machines do well under 8, but sometimes some driver or firmware updates are needed. And, a few nonessential features might not work. 1.5GB RAM not great, but should do OK on not RAM intensive tasks.

If you don't upgrade now, down the track you'll wish you had because the special price expires in the matter of days.

I didn't want to, but I did simply so I only had to pay US$40 for Pro with media center.

You could also save your current system with Todo Home Backup, then upgrade (AND ACTIVATE!), and back that system up too. That way you have both installations ready to use on your machine. You simply restore the system image you want, whcih means you can keep using your current OS and use 8 later by simply restoring the system backup of your fresh and activated 8 installation.

It's very important that you activate windows 8 as soon as you get it or the licence will expire after 31 Jan 2013 because of the price you paid.

I'd suggest obviously running the upgrade assistant to see if your PC's processor has the supported features to run Windows 8, such as PAE.

Considering you specs, I'd run Windows 8 over 7. You save on system resource hogging, at least about a good 100 MBs over 7. Performance is straight up faster than 7 on older hardware, and it will probably feel like new life was breathed into your old PC! This is true.

Since your PC has driver support up to Windows 7 right now, very good chances are that you'll be fine in that department. My concern however is the graphics driver support, you might not be able to run the native screen resolution of your monitor. I'd go for it, but I'd also make a hard drive partition and installing clean within that newly made partition to see how everything runs before you switch over.
