    access denied on harddrive

    Hi

I have installed Windows 8 on a fresh SSD drive and also connected my exsisting extra harddrive which I have previously used together with Windows 7. When I try to access that harddrive I get a "access denied" message even though I'm a administrator, what do I need to do to get access to my hard drive?

Your account is an administrator on your computer. Not the computer that the hard drive was originally used on. The permissions on the drive are set for your other computer, so you need to take ownership and change the permissions.

Following up on Mystere's suggestion, here is a tutorial on taking ownership. Note that the link refers to another related tutorial should you be interested: Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8.

I now tried the reg file that use the "take ownership option" and used that on d:, but it does not help, I still get the same error

The weird thing is that, when I deatach the ssd disk with win 8 and attach the ssd that hold the win 7 I still cannot access the drive, but If I open a command prompt with "run as administrator" I can copy the files from the drive to another external drive.

    What could be wrong?

Right now I've started a copy of all my files and folders from command prompt to another external usb HD so that I at least can access my files, otherwise I would be in huge trouble....

That is super. Looking around for possible solution. Home now.

    Here's a starter on fixing.

After a fair amount of searching, I have not found anything that looks decent in terms of your problem.

Beyond what you have done, take a look at this tutorial. I suggest your try the step below from this tutorial--assuming the step applies to an external drive. Try giving full access (F) to everyone.

    4. To Allow or Deny Permissions for a Folder or Drive in a Command Prompt
NOTE: This command will set permissions for the folder or drive, and all files and subfolders in the folder or drive.

    A) In the elevated command prompt, type the command below and press Enter.

NOTE: Substitute full path of folder or drive with the full path of the folder or drive that you want to set permissons for within quotes.
Substitute user name or group with the name of the user account or group that you want to grant permission to within quotes.
Substitute switch with a switch letter in the table for what permission you would like to set
    .

icacls "full path of folder or drive" /grant "user name or group":switch /T

    Have you tried this?

Does your new installation of win8 have an account with the same user name and password as what was on the win7 OS?
If not, create one and log into it, then try accessing the files. If you have success, change the permissions of the disk to "everyone" FULL CONTROL.

I have has major issues with that kind of thing when using an account with no password set.
