access denied on harddrive

Hi, I have EXACTLY the same problem. I have tried all the methods to "take control" and I have not had any success yet. I too can access the drive using DOS, and I can copy files from it, but in Windows I always get the "Access Denied" message. This message is titled " Location is not available" which suggests to me that it's not about permissions but something else ?? Has anybody had any success or other ideas ??

If you can copy all of your files onto another drive, see if you can just reformat it after that. If that works, it will be a fairly quick fix at least!

Thanks Mike, that's what I plan to do. You're right about it being fairly quick, but it's not without a lot of pain !

I know! Hard drive problems are no fun!! Weird problems like this can be very time consuming and frustrating. I just resolved a frustrating problem with a hard drive on a new HP Envy and all I was doing was trying to add a second drive. Sounds easy? Should have been! After two days I just bought a new drive. The original that came with it is not bad, it just would not work as a second drive. While I do not have the satisfaction of knowing exactly what the problem was, I am now enjoying my new laptop!!

Hey guys, I know I'm bumping a pretty old thread here but I wanted to add something because this is one of the first Google results when searching for "windows 8 + locked hard drive". So, just to help anyone else who Googles this issue, I guess it's relevant.

The Take Ownership option in this thread failed me but I found this article and I was able to access my locked drive that way. I had to add "Everyone", for some reason adding my currently logged in user wasn't doing it. Anyway that fixed it for me.

Sorry if it was wrong to bump this thread :-x

"Your account is an administrator on your computer. Not the computer that the hard drive was originally used on. The permissions on the drive are set for your other computer, so you need to take ownership and change the permissions."

I am getting access denied when attempting to get into a folder. Just recently installed Windows8. I had the same issue with win7, but I managed to resolve it. What do I need to do to get around this? I don't remember ever having had a problem with simply getting into one of my own folders.
