Wakes immediately after going to sleep

    My computer cannot sleep!

I did a fresh install (upgrade) and the moment I got the desktop up and idle, I tried to put the computer to sleep. It did, then 5 seconds later, on it came again.

Event viewer says "wake source unknown".

I have updated all drivers from asus, and installed all windows updates. No difference.

I have used every tool POWERCFG gives, it's report is clean, there are no wake requests, all devices (mouse keyboard) have had their wake ability disabled, I have even disable ALL devices in bios, booted without a keyboard and mouse and still, it wakes as soon as it's put to sleep. Even with all on board devices disabled except for sata.

    Wake source: unknown.

I boot into Win 7 from another hard drive, no issues.

One thing to note is that from a fresh restart, if i put it to sleep, it stays asleep. Once waked, it will never sleep again. Restart the system, leave for idle for ages, hit the power button; it goes to sleep and stays. After waking, it never stays asleep again.

I have tried safe mode. no difference.

    I have disabled all services.
I have changed all the power settings to disable wake timers and to allow sleep during sharing.
    Still no difference.

I've tried everything there is to try and exhausted all leads searching google and looking in forums.

What's up with my Asus Z8P68-V Pro that disagrees with windows 8? All my other machines have no issue.

I have no choice but to keep using Win7 at the moment, I can't have a computer that doesn't sleep.

    Anything I haven't tried?
    Suggestions much appreciated.

You may want to check your devices under Device Drivers and look for those items that have a Power Management tab in the properties window. I have found several on my ATIV tablet that have check boxes allowing the device to wake the computer. For example, my ASIX Fast Ethernet Adapter could wake my PC - I have unchecked this box. There are others like this

    Just a thought.

One of the first things I did; it made no difference.

    I ran POWERCFG /DEVICEQUERY WAKE_ARMED
I disabled the wake ability on all devices listed.

I have tried all the various powercfg things that have proved useful, but ineffective at fixing my problem.

POWERCFG /ENERGY reports nothing keeping the computer awake.

POWERCFG /LASTWAKE reports no wake source at all.

    POWERCFG /REQUESTS reports nothing.

And remember I disabled all the on-board devices in the BIOS and unplugged all USB devices, still to no avail.

I'm unable to try this at the moment, but I doubt it will do anything. I don't want to disable hibernate so that I can sleep (as the instruction states) so it's not going to work well for me even if it did, I need hibernate to make quick boot work.

    BTW:
my computer wakes from hibernate AND SHUTDOWN too. I had no idea Windows 8 could wake a computer from shutdown, but now I know what the quick boot setting is for and that's why.

    either way, no fix :-)

I see. You could try turning fast startup off. Doing so has solved some problems maybe related to yours.

    I FINALLY found the problem!

It is a quirk of the motherboard.

I'm really sorry guys but the one and only thing I hadn't done yet, that I was saving for very last and did today was remove my Freeview card; HVR2200 PCI-e Hauppauge Computer Works

I was right for thinking it wasn't to blame, but not right for waiting so long to try removing it.

I removed the card from the first PCIe 1x slot and that fixed the sleep problem... half way, because I still want to be able to use the card!

I tried uninstalling the drivers so that it came up as an unknown device. Didn't help.
I tried changing the PCIe speed settings for the 3rd full size slot from AUTO to 1x to 4x. Didn't help.

So I tried another slot, the 2nd 1x slot. Didn't even turn in device manager. So I slotted it one of the 3 fill size slots and guess what... FIXED!

Simply removing the TV Tuner card from the 1x slot to any one of the largest full size PICe slots (which are all unused BTW) fixed the problem. So it's not the TV Card that's to blame, it's a problem with my motherboard and it's 1x PCIe slots. Keeping in mind the the TV card functioned perfectly in those slots and never aroused any suspicions. Functionally, changing from 1x slot to full size has changed nothing except for the fact that my PC can now go to sleep and STAY ASLEEP.

The TV card's drivers were inconsequential, and I had already updated to the latest BIOS and chipset drivers from Asus.

I'm very happy now I can enjoy Windows 8 on my desktop PC, which makes my 4th Win-8 upgrade.
