Those animated tiles on the start screen make me nervous. I always turn the animations off. If I want the information, I start the app. But then it starts animating again. Looks like catch 22. Do you see value in the animations ??

    Hello Wolfgang,

Odd, turning off live updates for an app tile should keep it turned off until you manually turn it back on.

Thanks Shawn - I knew it, I knew it, I knew that you would have the answer. And I am not Gomer Pyle, LOL.

Yeah, those I like. I watch one every night after I have turned my desktop off.

Most interesting topic title I've ever seen on the internet.... Well done!

Personally, I see value in the live tiles. On Windows Phone, it's better defined. But with time, Windows will get a better live tile definition. It's easier to view relevant information on smaller "windows" versus having to have multiple windows open and refresh some browser tabs/windows.

It just makes me nervous when 3 or 4 tiles are constantly changing.

I agree. Live tiles, in my opinion, are probably one of the biggest "value propositions" of the Win8 Start screen and with a wide variety of useful functions depending upon the app. At a glance, you can get quite a lot of information. I like, for example, that an email app shows me right on the tile how many unread messages I have come in, or that the news app shows the top story headline or flips through a few top story headlines. Great feature. App developers have barely scratched the surface yet.

Actually, that's a good point. There can be some physiological responses to things flashing and/or changing at various rates. With lots of tiles changing, we'll see... I'm sure it depends upon the person and their temperament. If I recall, I think they generally have an option whether you want the tile active or not, which is a great option to have.
